Providing compassionate care & continuity from fertility to pregnancy at Norwest Private, Westmead Private & Westmead Public I trained in the specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology at Westmead Hospital after obtaining my medical degree from the University of Sydney. After spending one year of advanced training in the United Kingdom I commenced private practice in 1996. Since then I have held the

position of Visiting Medical Officer in Western Sydney Area Health Service. As well as working out of Norwest Private Hospital, I have an appointment at Westmead Public Hospital where I am the Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department. Through my work at Westmead, I am regularly involved in the care of complex and high-risk patients. I am involved in the teaching of medical students from the Universities of Notre Dame and Sydney and am also extensively involved in the training of junior doctors in the specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology. I am presently the Chair of Training for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and am also a NSW representative on the College’s federal council. The major focus of my private practice is endeavouring to provide high-quality personalised care, whether that be related to pregnancy, gynaecological problems or infertility. Pregnancy affects emotional wellbeing as well as physical health. It is very important that we can talk about how you are “feeling” as well as how your pregnancy is progressing.

Many women experience periods of worry or heightened sensitivity. Increased anxiety is especially common in pregnancy. Acknowledging this is important. It helps us provide care that supports both physical and emotional needs.

Distance running teaches you to pay attention to pacing, fatigue and early signs of change. Most of all it teaches patience.

Obstetrics requires similar awareness.

Pregnancy, labour and birth can move in different directions, and a steady mindset, with a calm patient approach helps guide families through uncertainty with clear reasoning.

Running has strengthened my ability to stay calm under pressure, which is essential in complex clinical situations.

Labour progress is assessed by combining several observations in the context of your pregnancy journey and you as a person.

We look at contraction patterns, cervical changes, fetal wellbeing and maternal symptoms.

No single measure defines progress.

We work together to form a complete picture before discussing options, especially around intervention or timing.

Listening is one of the most important parts of medical care.

When I understand your concerns, your history and your goals, the clinical picture becomes clearer. This allows us work together to tailor your care more effectively.

IVF involves science, technology and precise laboratory work. It also involves waiting, uncertainty and emotional effort. In addition it involves connecting with a couple or woman wherever they happen to be on their fertility journey.

Patients often find the in-between moments the most challenging.

My role is to guide people through the medical process and also support them through these periods of uncertainty with clear communication and realistic expectations.

Birth preferences or plans are not essential but can be helpful because they encourage reflection on labour and birth and can encourage worthwhile conversations with both your partner and care provider.

A plan may outline your preferences and create opportunities to discuss options and possible variations.

Labour and birth can unfold in unexpected ways, but the aim of planning is shared understanding. This helps you feel supported and well prepared when labour begins.

High quality, safe, woman-centred pregnancy care is a team effort.

Obstetricians, midwives, anaesthetists, neonatologists and sonographers (and others!) contribute different expertise.

Collaboration ensures that decisions are timely, coordinated and centred on the needs and wellbeing of mother and baby.

Caring for someone from fertility treatment through pregnancy creates continuity that supports truly personalised care.

I already understand your whole story, your preferences and the journey that led you to this point.

That familiarity strengthens communication and helps guide decisions at every stage.

I avoid using the term “high risk pregnancy”.

There’s no clear agreement on what it actually means.

Almost all pregnancies carry some degree of risk, some much more than others, but every pregnancy is unique. Just as every woman is unique.

Care should never be one-size-fits-all.

The other thing about risk is that it is relative rather than absolute and can change drastically as the pregnancy progresses.

I find it best to focus on providing the best possible care for each woman and her pregnancy rather than using labels such as “high risk”.

Clear explanations and thoughtful discussions can make a significant difference during fertility treatment.

When couples understand what each step involves and why it is being discussed, the process becomes more structured and less overwhelming.

Embryo development is assessed carefully in the laboratory. Embryologists look at the timing of cell division, structural features and developmental milestones. Having access to a laboratory with the latest technology is essential.

No single feature predicts success.

However, the overall pattern helps guide decisions about the next steps in treatment.

Understanding this process can help patients feel more connected to the science behind their care.
