Egg shakers might look like a simple toy… but they can target SO many speech and language goals!

🥚 Sensory toy – great for regulation and engagement
🥚 Counting syllables – shake once for each beat in a word (e.g., di-no-saur)
🥚 Bowling game – roll the egg and say a word before knocking something down
🥚 Hiding eggs – practise prepositions (in, under, behind, next to)
🥚 Concepts – fast/slow, near/far, first/last
🥚 Following directions – “shake before you pass it”, “jump after you shake it”
🥚 Verbs – shake, roll, throw, hide, find
🥚 Turn-taking – wait, watch, then take your turn

✨ Simple toys = powerful therapy tools.

Auditory Processing vs Auditory Memory 👂🧠

They’re often confused — but they impact learning in very different ways.

🔹 Auditory processing is how the brain interprets sounds (e.g. hearing the difference between similar sounds, processing speech in noise).
🔹 Auditory memory is how we hold onto and use what we hear (e.g. following instructions, recalling sentences, remembering information).

A child might hear perfectly… but still struggle to follow directions, remember what was said, or keep up in the classroom.

As speech pathologists, we:
✔️ Identify red flags for auditory processing and refer appropriately
✔️ Assess and support auditory memory
✔️ Use strategies that actually improve real-life learning (not just drill-based tasks)

Because it’s not just about hearing — it’s about understanding, remembering, and using language effectively.

Every child develops at their own pace - but knowing the milestones helps you spot wins early (and possible concerns too).

Here’s a quick guide:

👶 6-9 months: Babbling, responding to their name, using gestures
🗣 12 months: First words + understanding simple instructions
💬 18 months: Words growing fast + starting 2-word phrases
🧩 2 years: Short sentences + following simple directions
📖 3-4 years: Telling little stories + clearer speech
🌟 4-5 years: Speech mostly clear to strangers + asking LOTS of questions

Milestones aren’t strict rules; they’re guides. And early support makes a BIG difference.

The best way to boost speech?
Talk. Read. Sing. Play. Repeat. 🎶📚🫧
