Set a goal. I want to read more and scroll less. I want to connect more to my partner. I want to work on having a voice. I want to be more organised. I want to use my voice with more confidence. I want to learn the piano. I want to be calm when my child throws a tantrum. I want to be more present......the list is endless.
At the end of each day write dot points in your journal. When did you do it well? What helped you do it well? When was it challenging? What made it challenging? How can you do it differently?
If you know you're going to do this at the end of the day, you're likely to be more attentive throughout the day looking for experiences to document. Writing and reflecting at night means you have to dive deep and you start visualising how you can be better at it. When you encounter experiences you will be more likely to naturally be able to put the skills in place over time.
Tips: be prepared to fail and learn from it
attach the journalling to dinner rather than bed time
writing solidifies it and ensures you can't cheat yourself of the experience
dot points make it simple and achievable.

Even if or especially if we are going through something challenging, it is helpful recognise the difficult thing is not happening all the time. It may be helpful to clear space and ground ourselves in the moment so we can function in the day to day, do the things we would usually enjoy, take care of ourselves and others while also incorporating rest. If we can keep our energy maintained and the rest of our lives ticking along we have a greater likelihood of being able to think our way forward.

This is a tricky one. It can feel very difficult for some people to be the messy one:) it can be difficult for others to handle the hyper independent type when they fall apart and get messy. It’s not something the system is used to and reactivity can ensure the hyper independent turned messy one can snap back into place. Then The system can restore relative peace again.

It can be uncomfortable to feel messy for some but then if you stay there long enough comfort with the emotions may arise.

I would argue it’s good to be messy and express with the knowing we can regulate and still get the job done.

Just making a note though of what we can be up against if we get messy and the system isn’t accustomed to it:) people take time to cope with emotions and holding space for each other takes skill and patience.
It can be a challenge for everyone when someone steps out of their role:)
