Ken I will miss you dearly. You taught me so much but you were not only my mentor but my friend. I will always be indebted to you and will miss the positive effect you had on me and everyone that knew you. You loved travelling and hitting 3 star Michelin restaurants which inspired me during my fellowship overseas. Your work ethic and dedication to your patients helped me find my way when the future didn’t seem clear. Bravo Ken. You will live on in my heart and mind. Fly high with the angels my dear friend.

Dear patients,

In line with NSW government restrictions that come into effect on 10 January 2022, all elective surgery, with the exception of day surgery and urgent elective procedures (surgery indicated within 30 days [cat 1] and surgery indicated within 90 days [cat 2 urgent], are suspended until further notice. This means I can continue to perform all kinds of day surgery procedures plus:

- gastroscopy and colonoscopy
- day only hernia repair and patients with severe pain or disability caused by their hernia
- urgent gallbladder surgery for patients with severe pain or complications of their gallstones
- minor skin and skin cancer surgery
- emergency surgery

Patients whose procedures are eligible will have rapid antigen testing performed on arrival to hospital and will proceed with a negative result. PCR testing for elective surgery is no longer a requirement.

Hopefully these restrictions won’t last very long but if you have any questions or concerns or to find out if your procedure can go ahead please contact my staff who are ready to assist you. Please call (02) 8039 4548.

A good article written in Nature on mRNA vaccines. They are on the cutting edge of vaccine technology not only to combat infectious disease but some cancers. Hope this convinces many people on the fence or in the bog on the other side. And the reassuring thing should be that it was published before the Covid 19 pandemic began.

mRNA vaccines represent a promising alternative to conventional vaccine approaches, but their application has been hampered by instability and delivery issues. Here, Pardi and colleagues discuss recent advances in mRNA vaccine technology, assess mRNA vaccines currently in development for cancer and....

To all my wonderful patients awaiting surgery:

Due to the escalating Covid 19 response in NSW, as of next week most private hospitals in Greater Sydney will postpone non urgent elective surgical procedures. If your condition is likely to deteriorate or your condition is very painful then your surgery will likely go ahead. The request has come from the NSW government in order to reallocate resources into managing the increasing numbers of Covid 19 patients and in the mass vaccination effort across NSW. My rooms are open for consultation and we please kindly ask you to follow Covid protocols that will be outlined by my staff. We are available 9am to 5pm AEST Monday to Friday to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for your understanding in these most difficult times. Dr Ozmen and his team are fully vaccinated and are ready to help.

In light of the current COVID-19 situation in sydney, Dr Ozmen’s rooms would like to inform his patients, referring general practitioners and specialists, and the public that it is business as usual as elective surgery is still permitted. We are still adhering to COVID-19 regulations based on the current best medical advice and strongly recommend the wearing of masks when visiting our practice locations. If you have any cold or flu symptoms no matter how mild please do not attend the rooms, get tested and self isolate. Please also consider getting vaccinated for COVID-19 as this offers the best protection against contracting the disease to date.

Had the first of the Covid vaccine today. Has been a long time coming. Felt like the first step towards getting our freedom back and getting closer to seeing our friends and family we’ve missed so much. Timed beautifully with the sun coming out in its glory this afternoon.

COVID-19 PANDEMIC RESPONSE

To all my patients, colleagues and referring doctors. I’ve made the decision today to conduct all non-urgent consultations from home by phone/FaceTime/Skype for the next two weeks while assessing the evolving data on the Covid-19 disease from colleagues at the front line around the globe. Social media has become a useful resource to actually keep track of what is happening in the overseas hospitals and communities deeply affected by the crisis. Unfortunately I do not feel that the governments/chief medical officers slow approach is going to prevent the kind of outbreak we are seeing in Europe and our current trajectory is following a worrying trend. Given that the majority of transmission is by asymptomatic infected people it is very difficult to contain this virus without stricter social isolation measures. Flattening the curve, that is buying time, will not work. Containing the virus has been shown to reduce infections and deaths.

Patients currently booked for elective surgery in the next two weeks will go ahead if they do not wish to defer. They must meet self isolation criteria to be allowed to go ahead with elective surgery. Please contact my PA if you are not sure about the criteria.

We should not panic nor clear supermarket shelves. A calm level headed approach which we have seen instituted in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan is the way to go. The less number of infections today, the less tomorrow, next week and less fatalities in the months ahead. If you decide to stay at home don’t forget to eat a healthy diet, get plenty of sleep but above all exercise and get some fresh air everyday.

I wish all my colleagues the best on the front line and hope I can set an example for all non essential personnel to help each other and all Australians prevent an escalating health care crisis here at home.

Please do not hesitate to contact my rooms if you have any questions or concerns. Stay safe.
