Ride2Work Day meets National Podiatry Week! 🦶
Your feet do all the pedalling, so let’s give them some love! Here are 3
common cycling foot issues:
Hot foot (burning or numb toes) – Often settles with improved shoe fit,
arch support and better pressure distribution.
Cramping or shin/calf pain – Frequently improves with small refinements
to cleat position.
Cleat fit & alignment – Nailing alignment early supports comfort and
power as the kilometres add up.
If you’ve noticed any of these, it might be time to get your feet assessed by a
podiatrist. Healthy feet = smoother rides + fewer niggles!
Pro tip: The right footwear & support can make all the difference to your
comfort on and off the bike.
Do you know podiatrists can make orthotics to fit specifically into bike
shoes? This National Podiatry Week, give your feet the professional checkup they deserve.

👣 Happy Podiatry Week! 👣
This year’s theme ‘from first steps to next steps’,
reminds us that podiatry is about more than feet,
ankles and lower limbs. It’s about supporting
movement, independence, and quality of life at
every age and stage.
Whether it’s a child finding their stride, an athlete
hitting their stride, or an older adult maintaining
their stride, podiatrists are there for every step of
the journey.

5 Signs Your Ingrown Toenail May Need Surgery
Ingrown toenails can be more than just a nuisance — here’s when to see a
podiatrist:
Recurring Ingrowns – It keeps coming back, no matter how often you trim.
Severe Pain – Walking or wearing shoes is unbearable.
Infection – Redness, swelling, pus, or spreading pain.
Skin Overgrowth – The skin has started to grow over the nail edge.
Impacts Daily Life – You avoid activities or footwear because of the pain.
Good news: Minor in-clinic procedures can provide lasting relief and stop ingrowns
from returning.

What Actually Causes an Ingrown Toenail? (It’s Not What You May Think!)
Most people think it’s always from cutting your nails too short… but that’s only part of
the story! Here’s what’s really going on:
Nail Shape & Genetics – Some nails naturally curve in more, making them
prone to digging into the skin.
Tight or Poorly Fitting Shoes – Pressure pushes the nail edge into your toe.
Trauma or Injury – Even stubbing your toe can change how the nail grows.
Improper Nail Cutting – Cutting nails too short or rounding the edges
increases the risk.
Podiatrist Tip: Trim nails straight across, wear roomy shoes, and don’t ignore early
signs (redness, swelling, tenderness).
If you keep getting ingrowns, it’s worth seeing a podiatrist — there are simple,
effective treatments to fix them for good!

Balance Awareness Week 14-20 September 2025 - Better Balance
starts from the ground up and Podiatry plays a role in keeping you
steady on your feet!
Your feet are the foundation of your balance. If they’re sore, unstable,
or not supported properly, your risk of trips and falls increases.
5 Tips for better balance:
Wear supportive, well-fitted shoes
Try simple balance exercises (like standing on one foot while
brushing your teeth or while you are cooking!)
Get your feet checked regularly – conditions like bunions, nerve
issues, or poor circulation can throw your balance off
Custom orthotics can help improve stability and confidence in
every step
Regular exercise is so important to keep you on your feet and
keep your muscles strong and steady.
Remember: Strong, healthy feet = better balance = fewer falls. Book
your foot health check – a steady step is a safe step!
