Many years ago, while travelling through a small country town, I had dinner at a Chinese restaurant with a grey-haired friend. When we went to pay, the waiter waved us away saying no charge.

Outside, I asked why. My friend smiled and said, “They do that sometimes, just in case they’re in the presence of a wise man.”

An old Chinese saying comes to mind: treat strangers with kindness, for they may be an immortal in disguise.

I’ve never forgotten that moment. A quiet reminder to meet everyone with openness as you never really know who you’re sitting with.
