Implementing Specialist Vestibular Physiotherapy (SVP) in the ED

This study highlights both the promise and the challenges of introducing SVP services (where physiotherapists routinely assess and treat people with BPPV, rather than the previous model of medical intervention only) into emergency care.

Key lessons for services planning SVP in the ED:
- Build strong stakeholder relationships
- Develop a shared vision with clear goals
- Embed SVP into organisational processes and policies
- Strengthen workforce capacity to deliver and support the service

The takeaway: SVP in the ED can be transformative, but only when supported by clear structure, collaboration, and organisational commitment.

ED vertigo clinical pathways work to reduce hospital stays

This 2022 study by Stewart et al shows that introducing a structured ED vertigo clinical pathway reduces emergency department length of stay without increasing admissions, hospital stay, or adverse events. The pathway improved use of bedside vestibular testing and access to urgent physiotherapy with video Frenzel goggles, closing important evidence - practice gaps.

Future refinements, including the TiTrATE approach and rapid-access dizziness clinics, could further strengthen care.

Understanding Paediatric Vertigo: Why Clinical Awareness Matters

This recent editorial in Frontiers in Neurology highlights the challenges clinicians face when diagnosing vertigo in children—ranging from limited symptom reporting to lack of diagnostic tools tailored to younger patients.
It also reviews emerging research on:
- Common causes like RVC and vestibular migraine
- The impact of sensorineural hearing loss on balance
- Diagnostic strategies and clinical gaps

A valuable summary for anyone involved in paediatric care or vestibular assessment. Worth a read.

Vestibular disorders in children are often under-recognised.

Over 1 in 20 children experience dizziness or balance issues, yet many go undiagnosed. This helpful three-part series from VeDA covers:
- Common symptoms and diagnoses
- Simple, low-cost screening tools
- Evidence-informed treatment approaches

It also includes the Paediatric Dizziness Handicap Inventory—a practical tool for clinicians.

A good resource for anyone working with children who present with vertigo, imbalance, or gaze instability.

Uncover 3 Hidden Mistakes Keeping You Trapped in Persistent Dizziness

September 14-20 is Balance Awareness Week!!

🦩 Balance Awareness Week is an initiative from the Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA) to raise awareness about balance loss, vertigo, and other vestibular conditions.

🗓️September 14-20, 2025

The Vestibular SIG is encouraging Vestibular Physical Therapists to participate in Balance Awareness Week by doing the “Dizzy Bat Challenge” and posting on social media.

The Dizzy Bat Challenge will start by participants demonstrate their good balance by standing on one foot. Next they will put their head on a bat (or single point cane or anything else that will work in this manner) and spin around 5 times. After spinning they will try to stand on 1 foot. This will enable the participant to show how vestibular issues impact balance. At the end of the challenge you should call out 3 others to participate on social medial (just like the ice bucket challenge) and pledge to donate a dollar amount per spin to VeDA. The Vestibular SIG will send you updates, instructions, and a script to help you with the challenge.

If you’d like to be a social media spark participant in the dizzy bat challenge, please fill out the form in the link in our bio to be put on an email list to receive updates, instructions, and a script.

Thank you in advance for those who are interested in participating!

If you have any questions please reach out to Rachel Wellons at rtromm@lsuhsc.edu.

Exploring Paediatric Vestibular Care with Dr Jennifer Braswell Christy

Thanks once again to and hosts Dr Abbie Ross PT, NCS, and Dr Danielle Tolman for this valuable episode on vestibular dysfunction in children. They’re joined by Dr Jennifer Braswell Christy - Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at The University of Alabama at Birmingham - whose work focuses on improving gaze stability and balance in children with vestibular disorders.
It's an important listen for clinicians navigating the challenges of paediatric vestibular assessment and rehabilitation. Dr Christy also shares insights from her research and global education experience.
If you work in vestibular care and see younger patients, don’t miss it.

Central vestibular dysfunction in children deserves more clinical attention.

Dr Jennifer B. Christy (Semin Hear., 2018) outlines how conditions like cerebral palsy, ADHD, vestibular migraine, and autism may involve central vestibular pathway involvement, contributing to balance, gaze, and motor development challenges.

Dr Christy provides thoughtful guidance on screening, testing, and rehabilitation approaches for this population, while highlighting the need for more research and tailored intervention tools. A valuable read for clinicians working in paediatric vestibular care.
