Poor Sleep and Chronic Vestibular Hypofunction: Is There a Link Worth Noting?
Thanks to Katzenberger et al for their 2023 study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine suggesting that patients with chronic vestibular hypofunction may experience poorer sleep quality.
The study found a modest but statistically significant association between vestibular symptoms lasting ≥2 years and worse scores on the PSQI. While the cross-sectional design means we can’t draw conclusions about causation, it’s a reminder of what many clinicians already suspect: poor sleep and persistent vestibular issues often go hand in hand.
What does this mean in practice?
Consider screening for sleep disturbance in patients with long-standing dizziness.
Be alert to the possibility that disrupted sleep may contribute to slower vestibular compensation and prolonged recovery.
Sleep quality could be a valuable piece of the clinical puzzle!
