Okido Yoga Bellingen

Okido Yoga Bellingen Combines the practices of Indian Yoga, Chinese Qigong,
Japanese Zen Buddhism, Martial Arts, Oriental & Western Medicine We learn from each other.

Okido Yoga focuses on building your body through correctives so you can realise extensive Yoga Asanas, Movements and enjoy a stable Heart Mind. Includes purifying & strengthening Asanas (stretches), self massage techniques, corrective movements, physical games, laughter, breathing, chanting, meditation, & shiatsu massage…

The training method emphasises balance between opposites: tension and relax

ation, heat and cold, stillness and movement. The Corrective Movements help to correct any muscular injuries or tightness, spinal alignment, internal organ disharmony, and disease. Each Asana (yoga stretch) combines with Shiatsu Massage, corrective movements, trigger point releases & counter-balances to help release chronically tight muscles, fascia, ligaments and tendons that may be restricting your Asana, as well as the circulation and quality of blood and energy in your body, mind and spirit. The combination of Asana (stretches), corrective movements and massaging helps to dramatically increase your flexibility of body & mind – much more than only doing asana alone. Okido Yoga can help heal specific parts of the body (such as lower back, neck, and shoulders), plus ease pain and prevent injuries . The increased flexibility of body & mind is a simple way to help you to fully embrace life…

The five principles of Okido Yoga:
* Body & Movement
* Mind-heart
* Breathing
* Diet
* Harmony with Others (we learn from each other)

The practices of Okido are designed for those living with the strain, tension and diseases resulting from the technological confusion of our society. Through diligent daily practice of Okido Yoga, it is possible to heighten adaptability to today’s modern life, while re-creating one’s self-healing ability. Okido Yoga is based on the understanding that true knowledge comes from an awakening of deep personal inner wisdom, gained through individual experience of the natural laws of Change, Balance and Stability. It also emphasizes the importance of learning to work with, and for, others as it is not possible to create a balanced life that does not include harmonious and caring interaction within society. Okido Yoga is neutral from any religious group, and yet respects one and all beings. Its teachings are understandable and practical in the modern way of life. Suitable for Everyone at all levels

Each class varies
according to the specific needs of the people in the class

Okido Yoga also adapts to the environment and to the demands of the current season…

For example, in Spring, as the weather gets warmer and our level of activity increases, the Liver & Gall Bladder are more active, and stretching the side of the body (medial and lateral) helps to keep these organs in balance. The Liver is greatly affected by stress which tends to occur in spring from the increase in our activities (and decision making). Promoting the health of the Liver and Gall Bladder also helps to cleanse the blood of toxins, and this is a very safe and natural way to do your spring liver detox. Classes suitable for Everyone

Okido Yoga classes resume this Wednesday, 29 January in Bellingen.

What is Okido Yoga?

Okido Yoga is a type of yoga that originated in Japan and combines yoga postures, meditation, and breathing exercises with elements of traditional Japanese health practices.

(Okido Yoga is also known as Japanese Yoga.)

How is Okido Yoga different to other types of yoga?

Okido Yoga evolved from the teachings of its founder, Masahiro Oki, who blended various elements of traditional yoga (Indian Hatha) with traditional Japanese practices

It is a dynamic and holistic form. The focus on breath, energetic movements, and holistic approach can make it a powerful practice for improving physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

What a joy to see this comedy on the ridiculous of parts of the Yoga INDUSTRY.
Written by Dipika Guh, using comedy as a way to explore the dynamic between the superficial and deep.
In the end, when I take myself too seriously, what I do is no longer really yoga... because if I create separation, I can no longer yoke together the different parts of myself.
My favourite line from the play:
"Namaste"
"GoAway!"
I remember my first experience of Okido Yoga in 1991... a three day workshop in Pittwater - it felt like a huge relief to find someone that understood life as an internal experience- not a list of hierarchal external goals and yoga poses to be checked off like a fast food menu, without any relationship with my internal processes.
Highly recommend seeing this production if you ever get the chance.

Someone asked me once: Are you allowed to perform yoga if you are not wearing yoga pants?
Answer: Of course you can.
The most important thing is the yoga you are doing, rather than how you look.
It is easy to get trapped in an external appearance, rather than the internal experience of integrating parts of ourselves.
However, it is also important that you wear something comfortable that allows you to move and stretch freely without feeling self conscious.
Another question: can you practice yoga without a yoga mat?
Answer: yes, if you want to, or have forgotten your mat
Flexible body, flexible mind

Exactly what we practice in Japanese Yoga.
Performing a preprogrammed system of yoga may just make conform you to yet another system. It does not teach you so well about change.
When we practice Okido Yoga, the fundamental principle is Change.
Changing habits, postures, behaviours. The great contradiction is that change is constant, as nature (and life) always seeks stability through balance.
Like Bruce Lee, we are not stuck in practicing only one style of yoga. Or limited to a narrow view of what constitutes yoga.
Oki, a Japanese man from last century, studied with many different ancient and modern traditions, including Gandhi and some of the great yoga teachers of his time.
The true aim of yoga is not only to have a flexible body, but also a flexible mind.
