R U OK day.
Today while we were supporting a young person they asked a very important question.
What do I do if my friend says their NOT OK?
So we brainstormed some options
Listen without telling them to "GET OVER IT"
Not be responsible for fixing them
Find a trusted teacher, parent, support worker, youth worker or therapist.
Sit with them to eat lunch
Visit a quiet place to talk
Check in each day to see if they are feeling better and what has helped.
This list is small but important as the ideas are from a young person.
Its amazing to bring awereness to mental health however we also need to teach our young people what the next steps are to support friends, family.
Asking young people to keep secrets is more harmful than helpful. Building trust, offering empathy, support resourcing of self. Being in nature and with animals are powerful ways to connect with young people.
