Creating a New Swallow Assessment Framework ✍️
On the plane back from the SPA conference in Adelaide, I felt so inspired. It hit me just how many speech pathologists across Australia are supporting clients with complex swallowing needs — often without enough guidance or resources.
For clients with severe disabilities, dysphagia can be a huge part of their health journey. But let’s be honest: this population is often glossed over at uni, and once you’re out practicing, there’s no clear “how-to” guide to follow. The research? Still a bit of a blind spot.
So the question is: how do we ensure evidence-based practice in a space where the evidence is limited or emerging?
After nearly 30 years working with clients with complex dysphagia, I’ve seen and learned so much — and now, it’s time to give back.
Somewhere mid-flight, I opened my laptop and started writing. I’m building a swallow assessment framework tailored to clients with complex disability — something practical, experience-informed, and grounded in clinical reasoning.
It’s still in the works, but I’m excited to share more soon.
