The dangers of sandwiches and especially peanut butter sandwiches

Peanut butter sandwiches pose a significant choking risk, particularly for children under four and elderly adults with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), due to the thick, sticky, and pasty texture that can obstruct airways

I have had experience with clients choking on peanut butter sandwiches. There is a solution. This will be presented.

Assessment Protocol coming soon - with no University specific subject in this area, it is a common theme and certainly something I struggled with in my early career. I am now fortunate enough to pass on my 30 years of experience in this area to support you.

Hi everyone! 👋 My name is Eduardo, but I go by Eddy 😊 I’m a speech pathologist, and from 2026 I’ll be joining the Communicate Connect Speech team! 🎉🗣️
I have 8 years of experience as a speech pathologist overseas, working with people with swallowing and communication challenges 🗣️🍽️. While re-accrediting in Australia, I worked with an NDIS service provider supporting young adults with autism to build skills and gain employment 🌱💼.

I’m passionate about supporting people to achieve the best quality of life possible ❤️, collaborating closely with their support teams 🤝, advocating for communication rights 🗨️✊, and supporting neurodiversity 🧠🌈.

I’m really looking forward to meeting you all and making 2026 the best year yet! 🚀✨

Cheers,
Eddy

🌟Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!!🌟
Last night the CC Speech team gathered to celebrate each others' efforts and accomplishments throughout the year. Sadly, we bid farewell to Madonna after more than 6 years. She has brought countless smiles and energy to the team and was always reliable and inspirational in her practice. She will be missed!
We're also grateful to have welcomed some new faces to the team this year who have brought new knowledge, skillbases and kindness with them. We're so excited for the new year to come!

Creating a New Swallow Assessment Framework ✍️

On the plane back from the SPA conference in Adelaide, I felt so inspired. It hit me just how many speech pathologists across Australia are supporting clients with complex swallowing needs — often without enough guidance or resources.

For clients with severe disabilities, dysphagia can be a huge part of their health journey. But let’s be honest: this population is often glossed over at uni, and once you’re out practicing, there’s no clear “how-to” guide to follow. The research? Still a bit of a blind spot.

So the question is: how do we ensure evidence-based practice in a space where the evidence is limited or emerging?

After nearly 30 years working with clients with complex dysphagia, I’ve seen and learned so much — and now, it’s time to give back.

Somewhere mid-flight, I opened my laptop and started writing. I’m building a swallow assessment framework tailored to clients with complex disability — something practical, experience-informed, and grounded in clinical reasoning.

It’s still in the works, but I’m excited to share more soon.

Like this page to stay tuned. 👀
