Finally….2024 Homebirth stats

Apologies for the delay, where has the last 6 months gone? Mainly catching babies, family time, healing a broken bone and trying to homestead 💜

This was another year of supporting 32 beautiful families making their own choices to birth their way and seek medical support when needed ⭐️

As the slides show we had 29 babies born at home with 3 in labour transfers needed and 2 transfers needed after birth.

The Babe with an unknown exomphalos herniation not noticed on early Ultrasound was otherwise well and had surgery to repair at RCH 💜

And as in a previous post the 100th baby was born on Boxing Day the same day as her brother 3 years before, what a beautiful coincidence to end the birthing year 💜

And just to remind everyone that ‘big’ babies can be born at home, even to first time mums!! A big shout out to this mumma who birthed her 4670g (10lb 5oz) beautiful girl through water 💜

The longest gestation in 2024 was a first time mumma who made the decision to continue her pregnancy until her body was ready to go into labour and then she embraced it with all the power of a woman at 43 wks ⭐️

I still feel so honoured I get to share this space with so many amazing families and I couldn’t do this without the support of my wife and our little ones 🥰
And the beautiful midwives who I also share this space with Louise and Krystal and her new baby

Happy Mother’s Day to all 💜🎉

Take a moment to reflect on how amazing you are! I supported one such amazing mama yesterday and her babe had a surprise for us!

A dropped foot breech 💜

There must be something in the air as I saw another midwife supported a breech homebirth yesterday too!

We had stepped out as there was a stall in labour to help them build oxytocin, then were called back to this image. We are all told this is not safe, babies can’t be born this way, Breech means cesarean blah blah blah

But this family held their baby after the mama roared them out and said this was so easy why is everyone so scared of breech.

I’m not saying everyone can do this but everyone should have the opportunity to try and birth their baby their way! As practitioners we should all be skilled to face the unexpected and be able to support this 💜

With so much gratitude to and guide to physiological breech on hand with my bestie as sometimes the knowledge needs to be reminded 💜

So grateful to BWB and the resources that are available for everyone ♥️

Breech birth should not be feared and women should not be led to believe the only way they can birth their baby is with major abdominal surgery!!
(Just ask a recently home birthing mama working with me 😉)

Posted • We are thrilled to announce that Rixa Freeze’s Project ECHO lecture is now available for free! It is titled “Vaginal breech birth: Why it’s important and how it works” and was sponsored by the University of Utah. To access the lecture: https://breech.thinkific.com/courses/why-how-eng

This is a great introduction to vaginal breech birth for both parents and providers. It explains why vaginal breech training is important and then shows the normal steps of physiological breech birth, including deviations from each step.

At the end of the lecture, Dr. Freeze answers audience questions. A resident also presents a case study, and we hear responses from BWB’s David Hayes and Kristine Lauria.

It’s a wrap on 2024 ♥️

What a year it’s been with awesome times and some challenging moments.

But broken foot and then back locking up aside 😱 IKR!! I have something beautiful to share…..

On Boxing Day 2021 a family had a beautiful homebirth with me and became 3. This Boxing Day the same family had their second homebirth with me and became 4 ♥️

So having 2 babies born on the same day 3 years apart is one thing, but this babe was also born en caul and unveiled by their mum 🥰

Also this babe was the 100th baby born at home since I opened this service, and it was also Krystal’s first repeat client with me 🤩

So many things about this family, their birth and sharing these moments with a beautiful soul that just fill me with so much love and joy 🥰

I’m also wondering if it’ll happen again in another 3 years 😂

When life gives you lemons!! (Just an analogy)

So for now I’m a midwife with a twist 🍋
I took a fall and managed to crack a bone so now I’m confined to using these tools (in addition to my Midwifery skills-cos there’s babies due)

As I always advise my clients ensure you have the right supports around you, so that you can lean on them at your hardest moments and don’t be afraid to ask for help ☺️

I’m so grateful to my wife who’s taking all the lemons and making great lemonade ☀️

And so much love and respect to my 2 beautiful midwife friends who have assured me they’ll pick up the difficult stuff and even run me around ♥️

It’s stressful, it’s hard to ask for help and I feel really bloody frustrated (it’s only been a few days) but by reaching out to these amazing people in my life means I have the best support I can 🥰

Don’t be afraid to reach out to the people in your life when you need that support, you’ll make the best lemonade together 🤩 xx

Stop telling women they can’t!!

This is a repost from but for some reason the text will not transfer!

Ultimately the info is in the above slides and practitioners have to stop denying women the right to choose how they birth their baby if they are breech due to a flawed trial and lack of skills 😡

There is no reason that every practitioner should not be able to support a vaginal breech birth they just need to have the emergency skills in case a baby needs assistance…Exactly the same as a head down baby knowing emergency skills IF NEEDED!!!

There are some awesome courses being facilitated and and there is no excuse not to be offering this to women!!

Please complete!!!

Unless we raise all our voices, homebirth choices will no longer be an option!

I’m sure you’ve seen the BS ‘low risk’ insurance criteria that is being proposed!

But don’t stop here! Write to your local mp, the federal health minister, the shadow health minister, dhhs, anyone that has any links to health care, let them know it’s not ok to take away choices!

Together we can raise our voices ♥️

Posted • The Australian College of Midwives is seeking your input further to the Department of Health and Aged Care’s consultation on the proposed criteria for low-risk homebirth for the purposes of professional indemnity insurance for privately practicing midwives.

The first birthday is always a big reflection time for me, remembering the birth, the new born days, whats unfolded in the past 12 months, what went well and what I would change. I know my usual content is food and farming but this deserves the space. So buckle up because I will be putting up a few posts this week about the pregnancy and birth story
12 months ago I birthed my baby at home with a registered homebirth midwife, the wonderful and . For our area the birthing options are very limited, and I know how lucky I am to have experienced this. After 2 hospital births I didn’t want to go back to the hospital for my 3rd, unless we needed to. But when I made this decision I also made the decision to not tell anyone
People love to give you advice or their opinion on your pregnancy and birth choices. And now all I feel like saying “ahh sorry I thought it was me pushing this baby out, not you? Therefore your opinion does not count”
Being a social media couple thanks to Mr I was not interested in sharing this information until after I birthed at home. Birth is hard enough without everyone else telling you birthing at home is wrong, it’s dangerous, what happens in this scenario, can the midwives do this, can they do that, blah blah blah.
Birthing at home with my husband and our 2 midwives felt like the most natural thing. It felt normal, how it should be. And for this I am forever grateful because I know so many women don’t get this experience
More of this to come 🙌🏻

No surprises there ♥️

Posted • A study has looked at maternal and neonatal outcomes in midwife-attended planned home births versus planned hospital births in Spain.

Researchers analysed data from 3,463 low-risk births between 2016 and 2018, including 2,713 hospital and 750 home births.

They found several differences between the groups, which is often the case in this type of study.

“Women choosing home births typically had higher education levels and were predominantly Spanish. They were 3.43 times more likely to have a spontaneous birth and significantly less likely to undergo instrumental births than those in hospitals.

“Home births were associated with higher utilization of non-pharmacological analgesia and a more pronounced tendency to initiate breastfeeding within the first hour post birth. stronger inclination towards breastfeeding.

“Hospital births, conversely, showed higher use of the lithotomy position and epidural analgesia.” (Alcaraz-Vidal et al 2024).

Importantly, “There were no significant differences in neonatal outcomes between the two groups.” (Alcaraz-Vidal et al 2024).

The researchers conclude that:

“Home births managed by midwives offered better obstetric and neonatal outcomes for low-risk women than hospital births.

“These results suggest home birth as a safe, viable option that promotes natural birthing processes and reduces medical interventions.

“The study supports the integration of midwife-led home birth into public health policies, affirming its benefits for maternal and neonatal health.” (Alcaraz-Vidal et al 2024).

We have now added this to the ever-growing list of studies evidencing the safety of home birth on our home birth information hub.

You can find that, and the link to this study, at https://www.sarawickham.com/home

I will also be discussing this and other studies in July’s Birth Information Update.

HEY EVERYONE!!!

Calling all birth workers and parents alike, a friend of mine is currently engaged in her PhD study and she is hoping for some people to answer these brief surveys to help guide her research.

She is looking at what it means to be emotionally well on the journey to parenthood & then a codesign of an intervention to be delivered by midwives during routine antenatal care!

So by answering this you could hopefully help make a difference to the routine care that some families receive and impact some change.

Please note it is only for people in Australia.
