April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day and this year, we’re thinking about it a little differently.

Instead of treating autism like something to “be aware of,” we’re asking a simpler question: What would our community feel like if every autistic person was genuinely understood?

Maybe it looks like a classroom where sensory needs are expected, not explained.
A workplace where communication happens in the way that works best for each person. A neighbourhood where quieter spaces, patient conversations, and flexible expectations just make sense.

World Autism Awareness Day and the start of World Autism Understanding Month, is an invitation to shift from awareness to everyday inclusion — the kind you can see, hear, and feel.

Understanding isn’t abstract. It’s the small choices we make that help autistic people thrive, today and every day.

We’re proud to stand with trans and gender diverse people in our community, recognising their strength, leadership, and contributions.

At GCSS, we believe everyone deserves to feel seen, respected, and supported to live their life authentically.

Together, we can continue building a future where inclusion is our everyday practice.

To all our trans community members: we see you, we value you, and we stand with you.

Golden City Support Services was pleased to welcome Toon Benoot, a visiting academic from Belgium currently undertaking research with the Living with Disability Research Centre at La Trobe University.

Toon’s work in Australia focuses on the images of the future embedded within the NDIS, examining how policy, practice, and service delivery shape the rights, opportunities and everyday lives of people with disability.

As part of his research program, Toon is connecting with policymakers, frontline practitioners, and service leaders across the country.

During his time with us, Toon spent two days shadowing our CEO Natasha Williams to observe how Person‑Centred Active Support (PCAS) is delivered at GCSS across the region. The visit offered a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives on disability support systems and to reflect on the ongoing effort required to build inclusive, rights‑focused supports, both in Australia and internationally.

Toon will also be sharing insights about the Belgian individualised support system for people with intellectual disabilities through upcoming sessions facilitated by the Living with Disability Research Centre.

We look forward to continuing these conversations and strengthening connections between practice, research, and international perspectives.

We thank Toon for spending time with our team and for contributing to a rich dialogue about what best‑practice disability support looks like, now and into the future.

We’re already looking forward to the next opportunity to be out and about, meeting people and sharing what we do. 💛

Thank you to for bringing everyone together.

It’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week, and we’re taking a moment to appreciate all the different ways people think and experience the world.

We see this every day — there’s no single “normal” way to learn, communicate or make sense of things. Everyone brings their own strengths, quirks and ways of doing life, and that’s what makes our community interesting and creative.

This week is a good reminder to pause, listen and keep an open mind. Neurodivergent people shouldn’t have to fit into boxes that were never made for them. When we make space for different ways of thinking, everyone wins.

Here’s to celebrating real people, real experiences and the value of showing up exactly as you are. 👏
