Low Progesterone: Symptoms & Support 🌸

Progesterone, one of the major female hormones, plays a crucial role in women’s health. When levels are low, it can lead to a variety of symptoms.

Signs of Low Progesterone:

- Periods that are too frequent or too infrequent
- Spotting between periods
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- PMS
- Amenorrhea (no periods)
- Anovulation (not ovulating)
- Infertility or miscarriages

Estrogen Dominance:
Low progesterone can also cause an imbalance in estrogen, potentially leading to estrogen dominance, which may present with symptoms like:

- Weight gain
- Mood changes
- Premenstrual headaches
- Difficulty sleeping
- Low libido
- Breast tenderness
- Bloating

Testing Your Progesterone Levels:
If you suspect low progesterone, it’s crucial to test your levels throughout your cycle. Progesterone is meant to rise and fall, so knowing where you are in your cycle during each test is key. A good healthcare practitioner will ensure this is done accurately.

Remember, balancing your hormones is a journey. Book in at Holistic Her Naturopath to manage your hormonal issues with a comprehensive approach tailored to your unique needs.

Stress & Painful Periods: The Hormone Connection

Did you know stress can make your periods more painful? When your body is stressed, it shifts focus from reproductive hormones like progesterone to survival mode, increasing cortisol (the stress hormone). This hormonal shift leads to lower progesterone, causing more painful cramps and irregular cycles.

Your brain is running the show—it down-regulates key reproductive hormones under stress, which can affect ovulation and increase period pain.

Reducing stress isn’t just good for your mind, but for your menstrual health too! 🌿

Let’s talk lifestyle 🌿

Vagus Nerve Breath:
When we’re stressed, many of us unknowingly hold our breath, depriving the vagus nerve—an important player in calming the nervous system. But you can easily stimulate this nerve through slow, deep belly breathing.

Here’s how:
1. Breathe in deeply through your nose for a count of six.
2. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of eight.
3. Pay attention to your belly—feel it expand as you inhale and contract as you exhale.
This simple practice of mindful breathing helps quiet mental chatter, reduces stress, and keeps your vagus nerve engaged. Just a few minutes can make a big difference!

Exercise 🚶🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️
Many studies have found symptoms of stress to improve with exercise. Look to exercises that you find both relaxing and/ or fulfilling. Find something that works for you.
Exercise stimulates the body to produce serotonin and endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain (neurotransmitters) that us to feel good.
These are things you can do to bring yourself into contact with the present moment – the here and now.

They can be quick strategies (like taking three deep “belly breaths”) or longer, more formal exercises.

Different strategies work for different people, and there is no “wrong” way to ground yourself. The main aim is to keep your mind and body connected and working together.

Magnesium comes in several forms, each serving unique purposes in the body. 🌿

Here’s a breakdown of the most common types:

Magnesium Citrate: Commonly used for digestive support, magnesium citrate helps relieve constipation by gently relaxing the muscles in your digestive tract. It’s a good option for those looking to promote regular bowel movements.

Magnesium Glycinate: Known for its high absorbability and being easy on the stomach, this form is often recommended for improving relaxation and supporting better sleep. It’s combined with the amino acid glycine, which also helps calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.

Magnesium Malate: This form is ideal for people who need an energy boost or suffer from chronic muscle pain and fatigue. Magnesium malate supports the production of energy in cells and can be beneficial for those with low energy or fibromyalgia.

Magnesium Threonate: Noteworthy for its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, magnesium threonate supports brain health and cognitive function. It is believed to improve memory, focus, and mental clarity.

Magnesium Taurate: This type combines magnesium with taurine, an amino acid that benefits heart health. Magnesium taurate helps regulate blood pressure, making it a good choice for cardiovascular support.

Magnesium Oxide: This form has a lower absorption rate, magnesium oxide is still commonly used cheaper supplements. Although it is a more affordable option it not recommended.

Key Nutrients for Thyroid Support 🌿

Your thyroid relies on specific nutrients to produce and convert hormones that regulate many functions in your body. Understanding how these nutrients support your thyroid can make a big difference in your overall well-being. Here are some essential nutrients to keep in mind:

Vitamin D
Vitamin D is crucial for thyroid function and immune health. Low levels can impair thyroid hormone production and leave your immune system vulnerable, making adequate intake essential for optimal thyroid balance.

Iodine
Iodine plays a major role in producing thyroid hormones, especially T3 and T4. Both deficiency and excess can lead to thyroid dysfunction, so balanced levels are key for hormone production and preventing issues like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

Selenium & Zinc
These minerals are essential for converting T4 into the active form of thyroid hormone, T3. They also support the reduction of reverse T3 (rT3), a hormone that blocks the action of T3, which can slow down metabolism. Selenium and zinc also play a critical role in immune health, further supporting thyroid function.

B Vitamins & Methylation
Methylation is a vital process in the body that impacts thyroid hormone production and conversion. Proper B vitamin intake supports methylation, which is essential for the activation of thyroid hormones and maintaining healthy hormone levels. Since nearly 40% of people may have methylation issues, ensuring enough B vitamins is key to avoiding disruptions in thyroid function.

🌸 Supporting your thyroid through nutrition can bring significant improvements to your energy, mood, and overall well-being. 🌸

🌿 Holistic Solutions for Period Pain Relief 🌿

Dealing with persistent period pain? As a naturopath, my approach goes beyond just soothing the symptoms—because your body is signaling a deeper issue. Persistent pain is not something to ignore, and natural remedies offer a safe, effective way to address both the discomfort and the underlying cause.

Here’s how herbal medicine can help:

- Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric helps ease menstrual pain by reducing inflammation naturally.
- Boswellia serrata: This potent herb works synergistically with turmeric to offer anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits, smoothing out your cycle without harsh side effects.
- Ginger (Zingiber officinale): A natural muscle relaxant, ginger helps reduce cramps and soothe digestive discomfort, offering gentle relief during menstruation.
- Corydalis: A lesser-known herb that acts as a natural pain reliever by targeting pain receptors in the brain, making your period more manageable.
- Cramp Bark: As its name suggests, Cramp Bark is excellent for relieving muscle spasms and easing uterine contractions during menstruation.

Unlike pharmaceutical options that can mask the root issue, these herbs support your body’s healing process, paving the way for a healthier, more balanced menstrual cycle.

🌸 Protect Your Vaginal Health 🌸

Did you know that cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world? Unfortunately, our sanitary items aren't exempt from these high levels of pesticides. The mucous membrane of your va**na absorbs everything it comes in contact with (think about how effective medical pessaries are). So, it's no surprise that it will absorb chemicals from your tampons and pads too.

Choosing 100% organic tampons and pads can make a significant difference. Brands like TOM and Cotton Organics, which are available at most supermarkets, offer great options for reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals.

Take a step towards better health by making the switch to organic. Your body will thank you! 🌿
