The brain requires a constant supply of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids, to function optimally. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats can support optimal brain function. Conversely, diets high in processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats can negatively impact brain health and increase the risk of cognitive decline.
These nutrients are essential for building and repairing brain cells, supporting neurotransmitter function, and protecting against oxidative stress. Nutrients, ingested through food, directly influence brain health and function. They act as essential building blocks for brain development, impacting its structure and physiology.
But in our brain, unlike most of the rest of our body, these nutrients are not delivered via our blood stream but via the CSF. The CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) is a fluid that surrounds and baths our central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) with all this goodness. Our heart pumps our blood around our body but our CSF is pumped throughout our central nervous system by moving our body, specifically our spine.
So regular movement is critical for a healthy brain! This is just another reason to make sure we are active regularly and don’t spend extended periods of time sedentary, usually in front of screens. Regular mini breaks from our workstation to move as well as more strenuous exercise will keep to clear your brain working at it’s best.
