A new 2025 study found that women with ADHD may enter perimenopause up to 10 years earlier than women without ADHD - and yet no one is talking about it!
Women with ADHD had their highest perimenopausal symptoms between ages 35–39, while women without ADHD peaked at 45–49.
They were also significantly more likely to experience severe psychological, somatic, and urogenital symptoms across the board.
Why researchers think this happens: estrogen supports dopamine functioning in the brain - a system that is already dysregulated in ADHD⚡As estrogen begins to fluctuate erratically and unpredictably during perimenopause, women with ADHD have far less neurological buffer for that shift.
The result is that symptoms arrive earlier, hit harder, and are often mistaken for something else entirely.
Knowledge is the first step toward better care. The more we understand the connection, the better equipped you are to manage the symptoms off the basis of comprehension, validation (you're not going mad!)... and also a pathway to effectively treat the underlying drivers.
Th results in earlier support, better treatment decisions, and women finally being believed when they say something feels wrong.
