National Carers Week is a time to recognise the three million Australians who provide unpaid care for a loved one. Carers are the backbone of our health, disability, and community care systems. Their contribution is invaluable, not only to the people they support but also to our wider society.
But caring can also come with challenges. Many carers put their own needs last, which can lead to burnout. This isn’t just “feeling tired”, it can show up as constant exhaustion, loss of motivation, changes in sleep or appetite, and even withdrawal from family and friends. Understanding these signs early is important, because it means carers and those around them can step in and seek support before things become overwhelming.
National Carers Week aligns with World Mental Health Month, which highlights the importance of “Taking Steps on Your Well-being Journey.” Just as carers support others, they too deserve access to support that helps them thrive.
