Life After Endometriosis Surgery: What to Expect

Surgery for endometriosis, often performed via laparoscopy, can be a turning point in managing symptoms and improving fertility. But recovery and long term outcomes vary, and it’s important to know what comes next.

Surgery for endometriosis can significantly reduce pain and improve fertility, but it’s not a cure. Ongoing care, monitoring, and support are essential to long term wellbeing.

Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is a common but often overlooked symptom of endometriosis. I see how this condition not only impacts physical health but also deeply affects quality of life.

Understanding the Link...

• Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, leading to inflammation, scarring and pain.

• Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) is defined as prolonged periods (lasting more than 7 days) or excessive blood loss that interferes with daily activities.

While endometriosis lesions themselves don’t directly cause heavy bleeding, structural changes in the uterus, hormonal imbalances, and chronic inflammation can contribute to heavier, more painful periods. Heavy bleeding is not “just part of being a woman.” It can signal underlying conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, or bleeding disorders. Left untreated, HMB can lead to iron-deficiency anaemia, chronic fatigue, and reduced fertility.

1. This morning I grabbed the beard trimmer and saw the longer setting was next to it so assumed the shorter setting was attached. It was not and I am without any sort of beard for the first time since covid!
2. A very kind couple I’d seen on call earlier in the year gave me a box of cherries as a thank you just prior to Christmas and this is how they ended up being used. Thank you for these they were incredible! Across the festive days we barely made a dent in the box so yesterday I made a cherry tart. I learned 2 things - cherry tarts are delicious and making them takes ages. Again, thank you, they were wonderful.

Many thanks to Natasha for the phone call interrupting my exercise session and for finding me some more theatre appropriate foot wear than what I’d been able to grab as I headed out the door! When you need an obstetrician, we’ll be there, someone is always on call.

Endometriosis can make conception more challenging, but it does not make pregnancy impossible. With the right care, many people with endometriosis go on to achieve their dream of parenthood.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes or pelvic lining. This can cause inflammation, scarring, adhesions, and cysts, which may interfere with fertility.

Research suggests that 30–50% of women with endometriosis may experience infertility, though many still conceive naturally.

Endometriosis may complicate fertility, but with medical support, treatment options, and emotional care, many people successfully conceive. If you’re navigating this journey, know that you’re not alone and that proactive care can make a real difference.

One of the most powerful steps you can take on your fertility journey is learning to ask the right questions – and I’m here for it! For example, a question I get frequently is:

Q: How do I know when I’m most fertile?
A: Ovulation typically happens around day 14 of a 28-day cycle, but here’s the key:
• The egg only survives for about 12–24 hours
• S***m can live up to 5 days inside the female reproductive tract

That means your fertile window isn’t just one day, it’s the 5 days leading up to ovulation plus ovulation day itself.

Tools to help you pinpoint this window more accurately:
• Cycle tracking apps
• Monitoring cervical mucus changes
• Ovulation predictor kits
....and here’s no such thing as a silly or unimportant question!

Today, on International Men’s Day, we celebrate the strength and resilience of men everywhere. It’s also a moment to reflect on the importance of men’s health - physical, mental, and reproductive.

One question we hear often:
“Should my partner get fertility tested too?”
The answer? Absolutely.

Fertility is not just a “women’s issue.” It’s a shared journey. In fact, male fertility factors contribute to nearly half of all infertility cases. A simple semen analysis can provide valuable insights into s***m health and is often one of the first steps in fertility evaluation.

Reproductive health deserves open, stigma-free conversations and men deserve the same care, clarity, and support.

….because when it comes to building a family together, we’re in it together!

Australia, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers - and November is our national moment to spotlight the tools we have to eliminate it.

As a healthcare professional, I see firsthand how informed choices save lives. This month, we’re amplifying awareness around:

• HPV Vaccination: Now available free for anyone aged 12–25 who missed it at school.
• Cervical Screening: Recommended every five years for women and people with a cervix aged 25–74. You can choose between a clinician-collected test or self-collection, which is now widely available.
• Comfort & Consent: Download the Cervical Screening Comfort Checklist to ensure your experience is as respectful and empowering as possible.

Whether you're a patient, practitioner, or advocate, this month is about reclaiming agency over your health. It’s also a time to support those affected — through fundraising, education, and compassion.

🌸 Let’s make cervical cancer history.

As an obstetrician and fertility specialist, I see firsthand how pathology is not just about lab coats and microscopes - it’s about clarity, precision and hope.

On International Pathology Day, we celebrate the unsung heroes whose expertise underpins every diagnosis, every treatment plan and every moment of reassurance we offer our patients.

In reproductive medicine, pathology plays a pivotal role in:

• Hormonal profiling
• Endometrial biopsies
• Genetic and chromosomal testing
• Semen analysis and s***m function tests
• Cancer screening and histopathology

Behind every IVF cycle, every miscarriage investigation, and every complex case of unexplained infertility, there’s a pathologist helping us decode the story written in cells and samples.

This year, the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) and the Australian Medical Association (AMA) are spotlighting the need for sustained investment in pathology services - a call that resonates deeply in fertility care, where timely, high-quality diagnostics are essential.

We thank the lab teams who work tirelessly to support our patients’ journeys. Your precision empowers us. Your findings shape our decisions. And your dedication helps bring new life into the world.

Happy International Pathology Day - from all of us who rely on your brilliance to help dreams come true.
