From injury to redemption – this year’s Comrades Marathon was one for the books! 🏃🏆

The Comrades is the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon – a true institution in South Africa. Mention it to any South African and they’ll know exactly what you mean.

Each year, the race switches direction: one year from Durban on the coast to Pietermaritzburg in the hinterland (an “Up” year), and the next from Pietermaritzburg to Durban (a “Down” year).

Our very own paediatrician, Dr Scott, ran the “Up” year in 2023 and, while he finished, he suffered a nasty injury at the end.

This year was a “Down” run – and Scott returned to conquer the course once again, this time joined by teammate Dylan (a.k.a. the voice of reason). Both ran strong, crossing the finish line in under 10 hours and earning the prestigious Robert Mtshali medal 🏅. Most importantly, no broken bones this time!

While the race went smoothly, there was a moment of unexpected excitement… involving a charging bull elephant 🐘 – thankfully, they both made it out unscathed!

During their time in South Africa, Scott and Dylan also visited a school for children with disabilities – a humbling experience that reminded them how fortunate we are in Australia to have access to world-class healthcare. 🩺

We’re thrilled to welcome Britt from Upside Kids Physio & Health to the Leading Steps team! 👶🧠💪 She’s now offering paediatric physiotherapy services from our clinics:

👣 Mondays – John Flynn (Tugun)
🚀 Fridays – Pindara Specialist Suites (Benowa)

Britt supports children aged 0–5 with a wide range of developmental and physical concerns, including:
• Head shape differences (e.g. plagiocephaly)
• Torticollis
• Developmental delays
• Complex disabilities

She works closely with families and our multidisciplinary team to provide early, family-centred care.
