Noonga Season - Bunuru ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ

Season of Adolescence

The hottest time of year has arrived, the Noongar season Bunuru, the season of adolescence, typically falls over February to March. It is characterised by hot, dry weather, with little to no rain, and a cool wind in the afternoons.

Wungening Aboriginal Corporation acknowledges with deep concern the attack on the peaceful Boorloo/Perth Invasion Day rally on 26 January 2026, in which a homemade explosive device was thrown into a crowd of approximately 2,500 Aboriginal people and supporters. The device, which police have described as a fragmentation-type bomb with ball bearings, screws and explosive materials, fortunately did not detonate, but had the potential to cause mass casualties and loss of life.

We have heard from many members of our community who are traumatised, angry and fearful in the aftermath of this event. This was not simply an act of criminal violenceโ€”this was a deliberate attempt to target Aboriginal people and their allies while they were exercising their democratic right to protest and mourn.

We join other community organisations and advocates in calling on:

โ€ข Police and law enforcement to formally treat this incident as an act of terrorism and a hate crime under relevant Commonwealth and state laws, reflecting the political and racial motivations that this act appears to demonstrate.

โ€ข State and Federal government to urgently review the classification of this incident, ensuring responses to violence against Aboriginal people are consistent and robust.

โ€ข Mainstream media to accurately report the nature and seriousness of this attack and to acknowledge the fear and harm it has inflicted on the Aboriginal community and supporters.

This attack highlights a wider issue that our communities have faced for generationsโ€”the persistent threat of racially motivated violence and the uneven responses that follow. It also underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect the safety, basic rights and dignity of all Aboriginal people.

We stand in solidarity with those affected. We will continue to advocate for accountability, justice and the proper recognition of this incident for what it was: an attack that merits the full weight of the law, and the correct terminology โ€” including terrorism and hate crime โ€” in its description and prosecution.

Protest laws have been filling our news feed lately and with one of the biggest rallies on the calendar โ€” January 26 โ€” just days away, you might be left with a few curly, unanswered questions.

Like, "Why do First Nations people protest every year?" or "Do protests even lead to change?"

Here's what you need to know about the history and meaning behind the January 26 protests and events organised by Indigenous peoples every year.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this article contains images and names of people who have died.

Have we always celebrated Australia Day on January 26?

No.

To understand why we celebrate our national holiday on January 26, we need to go back in time.

On January 26, 1788, the commander of the First Fleet, Arthur Philip, raised the Union Flag in what is now known as Sydney Cove โ€” marking Britain's claim and beginning the establishment of the first colony.

It also led to ongoing conflict between the settlers and the First Peoples.

It was in this first colony that the idea of "Foundation Day" was born, and by 1935, after federation, all states had agreed "Australia Day" should be on January 26.

It wasn't until 1994 that January 26 was declared a national public holiday.

How long have Indigenous people been protesting on January 26?

Indigenous people have been protesting on January 26 for almost 90 years.

The year 1938 marked 150 years since British colonisation and as many Australians celebrated, thousands of Aboriginal men and women marched through the streets of Sydney protesting more than a century of brutal mistreatment.

Due to the number of negative and often racist comments we have monitored on many of our CTG posts recently we have NOW restricted comments on this post
