Do you know the difference between a natural burial and a conventional burial?
A natural burial is a simpler, more gentle way of returning the body to the earth.
It usually means no embalming, and using natural materials, like a biodegradable coffin or a shroud made from fibres such as cotton, linen, wool or silk. The focus is on allowing the body to decompose naturally, without introducing chemicals or synthetic materials into the ground.
Graves are often shallower than traditional burials, which supports this natural process. Markers also tend to be more minimal, like a small plaque or stone, rather than a large headstone. There is even the option to simply have GPS coordinates instead of a physical marker.
Something many people don’t realise is that these choices can often still be made within a traditional cemetery. For some families, this feels like a more meaningful and environmentally conscious way to say goodbye.
Is this something you feel drawn to?
