I’d see a scenario like this play out at least once a month, if not more. It’s not unique but it’s one I find the most gut wrenching because I know it was possible to prevent it in many cases. It’s also one I see time and time again on Facebook support groups.
In my experience, I rarely see this with women who have had an antenatal breastfeeding consultation, early professional breastfeeding support (usually in the first 2 weeks) and continuity of care postpartum with someone skilled to assess, manage or refer on quickly.
I’d also like to mention that in the absence of mums own milk, donor milk is the next best option. I haven’t kept up specifically chosen to talk about formula in this instance because unfortunately many mums aren’t aware donor milk is an option, and there isn’t necessarily the same fearfulness towards it as there can be with formula.
If this scenario hits home for you, go gently with yourself. I share this so that more mothers can be educated and aware. I formed consent is considering the benefits and risks of all options. Formula has its risks, absolutely. But exclusively breastfeeding purely based on the risks of formula, without considering its benefits, has its risks too.
I’m never here to judge, lay blame, impose guilt. This is a safe space, but equally one where I want to discuss issues and aspects of care that often go undiscussed.
