Hot weather can be tough, especially if you rely on medical equipment or medications.

Here’s what you need to know:
💡 If your medical equipment needs power or your medication needs refrigeration, have an emergency plan ready for power outages.
💊 Some medications can affect how your body handles heat, making it harder to stay cool or notice dehydration.
👩‍⚕️ If you have a chronic health condition, speak to your GP about staying safe during extreme heat.

Plan ahead to keep your health on track this summer.

20 seconds and a few centimetres of water is all it takes for a child to drown.

To keep your pool safe this summer, remember to:
⚠️ check that your pool or spa gate is self-closing and self-latching
⚠️ look for any gaps greater than 100mm under your pool fence or gate
⚠️ remove any climbable objects in the area near your pool or spa barrier.

Children should always be closely supervised by an adult when in or around water. For toddlers, parents should never be more than an arm’s reach away.

For more pool safety tips, check out Kidsafe SA.

I know you see that ear protection. 👒

Keeping track of the UV Index and recommended sun protection times helps you to know when you need to protect yourself from the sun throughout the day.

UV levels are rated from low to extreme. When the index is three (moderate) and above remember to:
👕 wear sun protective clothing
💪 apply SPF 50 or 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen
👒 put on a hat with a broad brim to protect your face, neck, and ears
🌴 seek shade where possible
😎 wear close-fitting sunglasses.

The medical education program enables medical graduates to undertake all the required postgraduate training to achieve Rural Generalist Fellowship based in RMCLHN, with a culture of integrated learning, research and clinical care to provide excellence in healthcare for the communities in our region.

Be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can affect anyone, but older people, people with chronic diseases, and people working or exercising in a hot environment are most at risk.

If you notice symptoms including headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and confusion, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

When left untreated, heat exhaustion can turn into heat stroke, which is a life-threatening emergency.

🤩 CONGRATULATIONS to Social Worker, Anabelle Stephenson, on completing Level 1 of the Allied Health Rural Generalist Pathway (AHRGP)!

Anabelle started the pathway in 2023 through JCU: James Cook University, Australia, with support from the Rural Support Service (RSS).

Anabelle was motivated to join the AHRGP as an avenue to extend her capabilities as a Rural Generalist Social Worker.

“I wanted to understand extended avenues of thought and build upon the informal experience and skills I’ve developed as a Riverland community member,” she says.

Anabelle has enjoyed the pathway’s multi-disciplinary approach to learning.

“I’ve had the opportunity to broaden my branches of understanding through interdisciplinary practice, and how it can best service clients in rural and remote communities.”

“I’ve been able to extend my skills as a Rural Generalist Social Worker and gain a clearer understanding of how thinking and acting outside of the box can help rural communities and the clients I support.”

Just found out you’re pregnant? Early maternity care can improve outcomes for mothers and babies.

Aim to visit your healthcare provider within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

During this appointment, your doctor or midwife will:
✔️ assess your health
✔️ provide you with important maternity information
✔️ assess your risk of preterm and early term birth.

Each year in Australia, more than 26,000 babies are born too early.

To learn more about reducing your risk, visit sahealth.sa.gov.au/pretermbirth
