Wilson's Stores 1892, Berry NSW

Wilson's Stores 1892, Berry NSW Mr Sir James Wilson built me in 1892!. I am located in the historic town of Berry NSW, I was built by the first Mayor of Berry Mr James Wilsons.

Lovingly handcrafted and I have many stories to tell. Be sure to read my posts. I am an iconic two storey building and was built as general store and residence for James Wilson by Sydney contractors. My building carries two dates – 1857, the date Wilson arrived in Australia and 1892, the date he moved into my building from his first store in Pulman Street.

Mrs Wilson is said to still frequent the space with sightings of her walking up the staircase that winds upward, each step fanning out from the center core with exacting precision. Embracing this glorious flight, an exuberance of the finest wood panel beckons an upstairs space with intricately carved designs topped by a delicate handrail upon which to lay her delicate hand. #

Do you think Mrs Wilson had curtains in the front of the Wilsons Stores in the 1890s? General Stores were established in the 18th and 19th centuries in many remote populated places where mobility was limited and a single shop was sufficient to service the entire community.

One of our grand fire places at Wilson’s Stores Berry.
Fireplaces typical of Queen Victoria's reign (1837-1901) can be categorised into two main styles: early-Victorian fireplaces are very ornate and ostentatious and include intricate designs often focusing on florals patterns, while the late-Victorian style are more geometric resulting in cleaner and simpler designs. At this time cast-iron fireplaces were very popular and many fire-surrounds in the principal rooms of London's larger Victorian houses were plain marble.’
Hence, the fireplaces in my building are of the later Victorian era. As such they were a very grand affair in Berry and wealthy households. This particular room in Wilson’s Stores was part of my residence for my family whilst working long hours in the front of the store. Thrilled to announce that a Fountain in my honour was erected on 30th Dec 1904! If you would like to know more… read the article below published in The Shoalhaven News ‘The drinking fountain recently erected at Berry to the memory of the late Mr James Wilson, the first mayor of that municipality (January, 1869), was unveiled on Wednesday afternoon last by Mr Lewis Mclntyre, J.P., the oldest ex mayor of Berry. The ceremony was witnessed by a large assemblage of residents and visitors. Addresses were delivered by the present mayor (Mr.G.Gillam), Messrs John Stewart, Alex. Hay, and Alex. Campbell.

The fountain, which has already been described in these columns, is of neat design and came from the masonry yards of Mr J. Dudgeon, Nowra. The memory of James Wilson deserves perpetuation not only for the good general work he did for the municipality, but also because of the general assistance he gave the settlers in that part of the coast in times when the people had nothing like the conveniences of the present day. There were only a couple of timber carriages and a bark "humpy" in the locality when the late Mr Wilson settled in it fifty-three years ago. He introduced the innovation of a horse dray into the place.

There was only a bush track, and none of the conveniences or adjuncts of civilised life ; neither were there places of business or postal communication. The late Mr Wilson often travelled miles to extract a tooth, set a limb or perform some other office for some unfortunate settler, and there are many persons still living who speak of the departed pioneer as one who must have known something about medicine and surgery.

Originally my shop was built as a general goods store and I did live out the back for a while in some beautiful little rooms. There are two dates displayed on the facade. The first is 1857 which is when I first arrived in Australia and 1892 was when I moved into the building.
