On Being There: Truths About Holding the Night

There was a time I was on speed dial for those in crisis. I’ve spent countless nights sitting with clients who wanted, above all else, to know they weren’t alone—a silent witness to their pain, sometimes doing nothing more than listening, just being present. People sometimes ask if these calls are hard. The truth? I always felt it was a privilege. Not once did anyone take their own life on my watch. I used to half-joke about it—Not. On. My. Watch.

Isn’t it funny, though? I’ve so often been told I was the safe harbour for others, that people could count on me to show up, not just to say “I’m here if you need me,” but to prove it, in the shattering hours. And yet, I’m the one person I know who wrestles the deepest, most persistent longing to slip away. The one whose faith in humanity wears thinner every time I see how easy it is to say the words, and how rare it is to make them real.

It’s easy to say you’ll be there—so easy to promise “Reach out if you need me”—but how many actually check in? How many do the inconvenient, unglamorous work of showing up when the crisis stretches beyond a single night, when the pain doesn’t evaporate with dawn? When people look back after losing someone, how often do they say, “Well, I told them to reach out,” as if that’s the same as being there?

Let’s be honest: that’s for your conscience, not for them. Because someone’s pain doesn’t disappear overnight. Trauma rarely ends with a single call, or because you handed out uplifting quotes. Unless by some miracle, they suddenly win the Lotto, find the love they seek, or experience a life-changing breakthrough, it doesn’t just go away.

If you love someone—really love them—choose more than words. Don’t just say you care. Be that persistent presence, inconvenient and real, who doesn’t drift away when it gets too hard. Because sometimes, the world breaks a person open so thoroughly that showing up—again and again—is the only miracle left
