We gather in 6-week Seasonal Cycles. Unlike traditional programs, we dance

to the rhythm of the land, following the ancient wisdom of the D'harawal people, graciously shared with permission by Aunty Francis Bodkin. By immersing ourselves in nature's embrace over these cycles, we don't just form a community - we become stewards of the earth and each other. Continuity in relationship with children, adults and Country enables us to build on inquiry, lean into collaboration and notice changes over time. Our 2024 dates are:

* Summer holiday program 18-20 Dec + 8-25 Jan

L'IL ONES AND BIG ONES | our 'stay and play' program

Bush Play begins a new seasonal cycle next week, exploring the early signs of winter, identifying plants, singing windy weather songs and deepening friendships.

The morning is a treasured opportunity for adults to be playful with their young children, romping together, crafting together and discovering natures wonders... together. The rhythm is gently held by Tamika, Bush Play mentor, who reads the energy of the day and flexibly responds to the weather, mood and interests of the group.

Wednesdays, 10am-12pm in West Nowra during school term.

BALANCING INTO WINTER | we are gathering around the campfire to learn firey myths and legends, firesafe skills and camp cooking recipes. Do you have a young one 4-14yrs would like to come and play?

Bush Tribe is on every Tuesday during school term. We move around with the seasons - currently in a gum forest just outside of Berry where we can build shelters, string up slack lines, light the fire and slide in the mud!

LEARNING CAN LOOK LIKE THIS | experiencing the world, encountering the curious behaviour of critters, noticing the changing sky, collaborating and negotiating with friends, sharing our observations, working in multi-aged groups... learning can look like this.

Bush Tribe is a program for preschool and homeschool students who want to learn by getting their hands dirty, testing ideas, designing their own experiments, asking quirky questions and reaching out to community members to find the answers.

Each term, our mentors choose a different inquiry skill - noticing, asking, testing - and this guides our time together. Morning circle sets the intention for the day - who wants to go on a walk, who feels like building shelters? And then the playful learning unfolds, following the child's natural curiosity. Some write up their observation in nature journals, some offer verbal reports on their discoveries as we say farewell... we each go home energised by time together and time in the glorious Shoalhaven.

THE WAY THE WORLD REALLY IS | we sometimes get asked why our groups are 4-14yrs. Well... when was the last time you hung out with a group of folks only born the same year as you?

Like adults, children's friendships can span across ages and developmental phases. We decided to bring children and young people (and their adults) together in family groupings for Nature Play sessions. It enriches our experience as we consider the world from the viewpoint of toddlers, preschools and teens. Mentors adapt activities to include the young ones and extend the older ones. We watch children teach each other skills, be patient for little legs and be inspired by longer arms. It feels... real.

LATE AUTUMN CYCLE | term program begins next week

Back under the tall trees and beside the dam (mud - alert - remember those happy dirty children from last year Bush Tribe families 😂), we'll be exploring stages of tree growth, bark and leaf types and plant stories. 🌳🌱🌴. Maybe we'll even find some harvest wheat to grind our own flour for camp cookout damper!

LATE AUTUMN PROGRAMS | we begin to cook up feasts of vege soups, bake bread and snuggle around the campfire

The young ones wrap up dollies in blankets and the older ones learn how to finger knit. We all explore the nearby bushland in the warm sunshine, sharing stories and discovering nature's treasures along the way.

LEARNING TOGETHER | term 2 programs are now open

Bush Play is a 'stay and play' group for families (0-6yr children) where we spend the morning in song, story, craft, games and connection.

Bush Tribe is an environmental education and outdoor discovery program for 4-14yrs and we spend 4.5hrs together learning about local ecology, practising bushcraft skills, romping in nature and playing with friends.

Tuesdays near Berry + Wednesdays near West Nowra.

HANDS-ON BUSHCRAFT | workshop Monday and Wednesday next week, Berry

We give kids real tools and teach them to make real things. It is amazing to watch the care they take and develop confidence in their skills. These holidays, young ones at our bushcraft workshops are learning to use hammers and nails to create artworks or spider web designs.

After crafting in the art studio, we head off to explore nearby nature, building shelters near the creek, playing romping games and going on a treasure hunt.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS | bushcraft, hammer weaving and insect hotels

Spend a morning in nature these holidays. Led by local artists and outdoor education mentors, each session offers children (4-14yrs) the opportunity to romp outside, catch critters in the waterways, find materials to make an insect hotel, use hammers and nails to weave a creation and make new friends.
