⚠️New safety warning for medicines used in arthritis and other inflammatory conditions⚠️

The 3 Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors available in Australia for chronic inflammatory conditions are baricitinib (Olumiant), tofacitinib (Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR) and upadacitinib (Rinvoq).

Groups of people at higher risk of serious side effects are:

• those aged 65 years or above
• those at increased risk of major cardiovascular problems (such as heart attack or stroke)
• those who smoke or have done so for a long time in the past
• those at increased risk of cancer.

If you belong to one of these higher risk groups, you should only be prescribed these medicines if there are no suitable treatment alternatives.

If you have any of the risk factors and you take a JAK inhibitor, discuss your current treatment with your prescribing doctor. They may change you to a different treatment depending on your inflammatory disorder.

Do not stop the treatment without discussing it with your doctor.

“Once upon a time, not so very long ago, before Coles sold vitamins, before there was a [Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy)], before there was a complementary and alternative medicine industry, there was the traditional herbalist. The practitioner of the garden and the hedgerows and the waste lands, and the bush was the keeper of the old ways, the old knowledge, the ancient wisdoms, the elder, the sage. That is where we find [our founder Lyndsay Shume], walking the well-worn paths of ancestral knowledge and bringing that knowledge to modern times.” Adapted from Evelyn N. Vale Dorothy Hall in the Journal of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society, June 1, 2012.

BLUE COHOSH | Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) is an important remedy for female complaints. Historically, it was used to prepare the uterus for labour (partus praeparator), for period pain and for various ‘inflammations’ of the uterus. It is generally classed as a uterine tonic. 🫐

BABIES DON’T MANIPULATE-THEY COMMUNICATE

On a recent trip to the park, I overheard a parent ranting and raving about a little one “being a brat and always pitching fits.” It took me less than two seconds of looking at the child to realize his mother had put him down on hot asphalt without shoes on, and his ‘fit’ was actually cries of pain as he danced around trying to keep his poor little feet off the asphalt while trying to push past his mummy to get back into the car. In a few years this mother will wonder why her ten-year-old is always so sullen and silent.

Later the same day in the supermarket, a three-year-old asked her mummy what plastic wrap was for. The mother rolled her eyes and snapped, “For wrapping food in plastic, duh.” A few years from now, this mother will confess to a friend that she has no idea why her nine-year-old is so mouthy and rude.

Our hearts aches on this day. You are not alone. We remember the babies that were so deeply wanted and loved, and the mum who love them.

To the mums whose hearts have ached with love for their babies, we think of you, especially on Bereaved Mothers' Day.

There is a lot we can do to aid heartburn and reflux conditions. Starting with a diet and lifestyle overhaul! Often these clients are so out of touch with what is aggravating their bodies, reducing coffee, alcohol and other dietary triggers can be massively helpful in reducing the need for these medications.

There are some beautiful herbs 🌿 in our Materia Medica, which can manage some of the symptoms whilst the dietary changes are becoming effective, like Meadowsweet- Filipendula ulmaria.

Managing stress can also have a considerable impact.

I love this, as so much of the healing journey take self- compassion.

When we strive to change or shift a health related concern or shed some kilos, doing this from a place of self- love and compassion often helps with “sticking to” new lifestyle changes but also forgiving yourself on the days you don’t, and wanted to have another go in the next new moment.

Self love and let the healing in! 💖🌺🌿

Trying to boost your own ego is largely pointless. Here's what works better.
