✨ Magic Milk & Big Wins! ✨
Watching colors dance isn’t just mesmerizing—it’s a powerhouse for developmental growth! We spent some time today diving into this “Magic Milk” experiment with our client this week.
Here is why this simple activity is a therapy favorite:
🖐️ Fine Motor Mastery
• Pincer Grasp: Using Q-tips to “trigger” the reaction works those tiny finger muscles.
• Grip Strength: Squeezing food coloring bottles builds hand control and stability.
🧠 Executive Functioning & Focus
• The Process: We practiced sequencing steps, following multi-part instructions, and leaning on working memory to get the “magic” just right.
• Visual Tracking: Sustained attention is key as they watch the colors swirl and move across the surface.
🌈 Sensory & Social Connection
• Calming Input: The visual “bursts” provide rich sensory input that can be incredibly grounding.
• Building Rapport: From joint attention to shared “wow!” moments, these activities are where the best rapport is built.
Who knew a little dish soap and milk could do all that? 🧪💧

“Acceptance is an action, not just a feeling. This month, we aren’t just ‘aware’ of autism—we are celebrating the unique perspectives, strengths, and brilliance that autistic individuals bring to our world. Let’s build a world where everyone is valued for exactly who they are. ♾️✨ ”

On Day 5 of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we’re taking a moment to listen a little more closely.

Because often, what looks like “behaviour” is actually communication. What we might see as “not listening”, “being difficult”, “not trying” …can actually be:
✨ overwhelm
✨ sensory overload
✨ needing more processing time
✨ difficulty regulating
✨ feeling misunderstood

Neurodivergent children are not giving us a hard time, they’re often having a hard time themselves. And when we shift our perspective from correction to curiosity, everything changes.

We start to ask:
💛 What is this child communicating?
💛 What do they need right now?
💛 How can I support them?

Because every child deserves to be understood, not just managed.

💬 What’s something you wish more adults understood about neurodivergent kids?

Neurodivergent joy doesn’t always look the way people expect. It can be loud, repetitive, full-body, and/or deeply focused. And too often, it’s something people try to stop.

But these moments are often a way to:
✨ regulate
✨ connect
✨ express excitement
✨ feel safe
✨ engage in self-expression

This is not something we need to fix, but to understand and celebrate! Because every child deserves to experience joy in ways that feel natural to them.

💬 What does neurodivergent joy look like in your world?

Today, we’re celebrating something that often gets overlooked - the strengths that come with neurodivergent ways of thinking. 🌈

Too often the conversation focuses only on challenges. But neurodivergent minds also bring powerful abilities to the world.

Things like:
✨ deep focus on meaningful interests
✨ noticing patterns and connections others may miss
✨ authentic and honest communication
✨ passion-driven expertise
✨ creative and innovative thinking
✨ a strong sense of fairness and justice
✨ persistence in the face of challenge

These differences are not deficits. They are different cognitive styles that bring valuable perspectives to our communities, workplaces, and schools. The goal isn’t to make neurodivergent people think more like everyone else.
It’s to build a world where different kinds of minds are understood, supported, and celebrated.

💬 What strengths have you seen in neurodivergent people?

Many autistic children learn to mask at school.

Masking means hiding natural ways of communicating, moving, or interacting in order to fit in.
Kids might:
• force eye contact
• copy others’ behaviour
• suppress stimming
• hide confusion or overwhelm

Masking can help children get through the day, but it often comes at a cost. By the time they get home, many kids are completely exhausted.

Our goal shouldn’t be teaching kids to mask better. It should be creating environments where they don’t need to mask at all.

Neurodiversity means that there is no single “right” way for a brain to work.

Some brains focus differently.
Some communicate differently.
Some move, think, and experience the world differently.
And that diversity is valuable 🌈

This week we’re celebrating the incredible strengths, perspectives, and identities of neurodivergent people.
Because the goal isn’t to make people fit the world, it’s to build a world where different brains belong.

POV: You’re an OT getting ready for a morning of “serious” work. 🏗️

Today, we’re setting up an “obstacle course” to help our clients through the three stages of praxis:
1️⃣ Ideation: Figuring out what to do with the equipment.
2️⃣ Motor Planning: Figuring out how to move their body and navigate safely through the course.
3️⃣ Ex*****on: Actually performing the movement successfully.

When we play like this, we are strengthening the neural pathways that help kids follow multi-step directions at school and home!
