It was great to talk and have dinner with you at the NSW conference Peter. We appreciate your support to the Australian manuka industry.

We got to welcome the esteemed Manuka honey scientist and long time friend Peter Brooks to our honey shed last week. Great to see the Australian Manuka honey industry Brains Trust together again. Michael Howes our Founder with Peter, they have worked together for many years developing the Australian Manuka honey industry to the benefit of everyone who appreciates Australian Manuka honey.

We also welcomed for the first time Dr Assma Boufridi who is the new Director for Honey Lab from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

โ—Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) was detected for the first time in Queensland. โ—

To slow the spread of the pest, beekeepers should take action now by:
โœ… monitoring your hives for mites monthly
โœ… reporting all hive check results via the Bee 123 form
โœ… decontaminating equipment between apiaries
โœ… stay informed on movement restrictions

Business Queensland is urging all beekeepers to follow these steps. Let's work together to protect our bees!

When it comes to choosing the best honey bee queens, there are several factors to consider, such as temperament, honey production, and resistance to disease. Here are some popular queen bee breeds that are highly regarded:

โ€ข Carniolan Queens: Known for their docility and resistance to disease, Carniolan queens are a popular choice among beekeepers. They're also good honey producers and tend to swarm less ยน.
โ€ข Italian Queens: Italian queens are another popular choice, known for their gentleness and high honey production. They're also relatively easy to handle and tend to be less prone to swarming ยน ยฒ.
โ€ข Buckfast Queens: Buckfast queens are a hybrid breed, known for their high honey production and resistance to disease. They're also relatively gentle and easy to handle ยน.
โ€ข Russian Queens: Russian queens are known for their cold hardiness and resistance to disease. They can be a bit more aggressive than other breeds, but are generally good honey producers ยฒ.
โ€ข Caucasian Queens: Caucasian queens are known for their high honey production and resistance to disease. However, they can be a bit more aggressive than other breeds and tend to produce a lot of propolis ยฒ.

Ultimately, the best queen bee breed for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. Be sure to research each breed thoroughly and consider factors like climate, disease resistance, and honey production when making your decision.
