Can your diet determine how soon you will go through menopause?
In a study conducted in the UK, more than 14,000 women were followed for approximately 4 years. The final analysis included 914 women who went through a natural menopause at a mean age of 51 years. Food questionnaires revealed their dietary patterns.
A high intake of oily fish and fresh legumes was associated with delayed onset of natural menopause by 3.3 years per portion/day and 0.9 years per portion/day, respectively.
It revealed that High dietary intake of refined carbohydrates, such as pasta and rice, was associated with an earlier menopause.
Higher intake of vitamin B6 and zinc was also associated with a later age of menopause.
Interestingly, this study displayed that women who were vegetarian had an earlier age at natural menopause compared with non-vegetarians.
These results suggest that certain dietary patterns are individually predictive of age at natural menopause.
