Hi there, Ren 👋

In 2025, Ally welcomed her beautiful baby boy, Ren, through Queensland’s first government-funded homebirth program with Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), supported by our incredible Birawan Midwifery Group Practice team, and WHAT an amazing journey it was!

Ren arrived safely at home via waterbirth on 15 November at 11:33pm, weighing 3.5kg.

“From pregnancy through to birth, I felt deeply supported, listened to, and respected every step of the way. The continuity of care and trust built with my midwife Mikaila, allowed me to feel calm, informed, and confident going into birth.”

And the care didn’t stop there! Ally described the postpartum support as “next level”, with ongoing home visits, guidance as a first-time mum, support with feeding, emotional wellbeing and recovery, plus the reassurance of a 24/7 phone line during those early days.

We’re so grateful to be able to support families through such powerful, life-changing moments, and to keep learning from your experiences as we continue to grow and improve our services.

Thank you, Ally, for trusting us with your journey, and welcome to the Coast, little Ren 🫶

Since opening just 8 months ago, our Gympie Nurse-led Walk-in Clinic has already helped over 5,000 people access fast, professional care for everyday health concerns, without the need for an appointment or longer waiting times typical of an emergency department. ⌚

Our passionate team of highly skilled nurses offer immediate care to the community with concerns such as simple respiratory conditions, urinary tract infections, women’s health, abrasions and burns, conjunctivitis, common colds, and minor cuts and burns.

Anyone over the age of 2 can access these services Monday – Saturday from 10am – 6pm, and if your needs go beyond the clinic confines, the team will refer you to the right place.

And the best part? All services are free, even if you don’t have a Medicare card.

That’s enough from us though, take it away, Gympie community:

76 junior doctors have begun their internships with Sunshine Coast Health this year, and HOW LUCKY are they (and us) to be starting their medical journeys in paradise 🌴🌊☀️

Coming from all over Australia, we asked our interns what brought them to Sunshine Coast Health.

We’re advancing women’s healthcare, closer to home, right here on the coast. 🌴

In the past year, more than 150 women have accessed hysteroscopy procedures at our Outpatient Hysteroscopy Clinic at Nambour General Hospital, without the need for a 6-14 hour hospital stay or general anaesthetic.

A hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows clinicians to examine the uterus to help diagnose or treat any problems such as uterine bleeding or endometrial polyps.

This advancement in care means that you can now walk in, receive treatment under local anaesthetic, and drive yourself home in around an hour. 🚗

But wait, there’s more! Our new “see and treat” model means some women can see a specialist and receive treatment on the very same day.

“This was a much better experience than I imagined… quick, painless, and I felt completely at ease.”

Easier, faster and more accessible care means increased uptake, early detection and timely intervention, ensuring better outcomes for you, our community. 💚

You may have spotted the green-looking water around the Sunshine Coast… 🌊🟢

Our Environmental Health experts tell us it's Trichodesmium, a naturally occurring algae also nicknamed sea sawdust, whale food or sea scum. It pops up seasonally and can form little surface blooms when it gets trapped in shallow coastal pockets, estuaries and sand bars.

When there’s a lot of it around, it can smell a bit funky - but that odour isn’t harmful. Like other algae (including blue-green algae), some species can release compounds as they break down in sunlight that may irritate the skin. So it’s more of a “use common sense” situation than a major hazard.

A few quick tips:
• Skip swimming where you can see algal scum sitting on the surface
• Rinse off with clean water if you’ve been in contact
• Don’t swallow water around blooms — toxins can linger for up to two weeks after scums clear
• If you feel unwell after contact or ingestion, have a chat with a health professional

A huge congratulations to the Nichols family! 🩵

Gympie Hospital welcomed its first baby of 2026 on New Year’s Day, with Raya Wendy Kay Nichols arriving at 10:42pm. Raya is already adored by big brother Tahj and big sister Saylah-Joy, with proud parents Emerald and Ryley Nichols soaking up the newborn joy.

Thank you to the family for letting us share this lovely milestone with the Gympie community. ✨

A precautionary measles alert has been issued for the Sunshine Coast. While the exposures occurred mostly outdoors and are considered low risk, awareness will assist in determining symptoms, ensure early testing and prevent further spreading.

The list of exposure sites and times is being regularly updated: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/newsroom/alerts/measles-alert-for-sunshine-coast

Members of the public who were in these areas, on these dates, need to be alert for symptoms of measles for up to three weeks from the exposure date.

The initial symptoms can include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore red eyes. This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face and then becomes widespread over the body.

If you have any of the measles symptoms, contact your GP or ED. It is very important to call the medical practice or ED first if you think you might have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading it to others.

For more information about the measles virus call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).

“When I first met Rhonda, I was a mess in bed, crying myself to sleep, unable to eat anything but [soft foods]. She had me eating protein food which gave me the energy I needed…and now I’m working again without fainting. I can’t thank her enough, she really did save my life.”

This week’s Human of Health, Dr Rhonda, is a Senior Community Dietitian with Community Allied Health (CAH).

What’s that? Lettuce explain: 🥬

“I support and educate people around their nutritional needs in relation to their medical conditions, transitioning them from oral supplements to a full diet in order to live an active and healthy life.”

Rhonda is a passionate foodie who celebrates the way quality food nourishes our body. She is genuinely committed to meeting people exactly where they are in their healing journey, supporting them to regain strength, confidence and independence through food. 🥦🥕

She finds so much reward in “the joy people get from improving their dietary intake” and trialling unique solutions for each unique case!

Rhonda’s love for food spills into her personal life, where she most enjoys spending lots of thyme 🌿 with family and friends, particularly over a shared meal, and exploring cuisines and cultures abroad. Most recently, she tasted her way through Vietnam and Cambodia. 🌏

Thank you, Rhonda, for channelling your passions into nourishing our community in such a holistic way for happier, healthier outcomes!
