Sunshine Coast Health

Sunshine Coast Health Welcome to . In an emergency, call 000.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (HHS) is located in south east Queensland and extends through the coastal and hinterland areas from Caloundra in the south to Gympie in the north. The HHS serves a population of around 390,000 people which is forecast to increase to around 480,000 by 2021 (an increase of 23%). This level of population growth is reflected in
current demand for services.

* Around one sixth of the population within the HHS area (17.2%) were born overseas
* 3.3% of the HHS population speak a language other than English at home
* Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders make up 1.5% of the HHS's population - which is 3.5% of Queensland's total Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. The Local Government Areas within the HHS area are the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Gympie Regional Council. The Sunshine Coast HHS provides services through:

* Sunshine Coast University Hospital
* Nambour General Hospital
* Caloundra Health Service
* Gympie Hospital
* Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital

and a comprehensive range of sub-acute, ambulatory and extended care, community health, mental health and oral health services, and aged care services at the Glenbrook Residential Aged Care Facility. Over the next 10 years, the Sunshine Coast HHS will experience significant growth in both service range and capacity including the construction and commissioning of the new tertiary Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital (SCPUH) at Kawana, which will open with 450 beds in 2016 and expand to a 738 bed facility by 2021. SCUH will offer a range of new and expanded services for the Sunshine Coast, including a Skills, Academic and Research Centre on site.

“From nurse in the Philippines to doctor to Aussie Emergency Department (ED), it’s been a wild ride, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!”

This week’s Human of Health, Raffiel, grew up in a family of clinicians, always surrounded by medicine, so the journey to ED Registrar “felt like a natural path.” 🏥

Raffi began her career in the Philippines as a Registered Nurse before deciding to ultimately pursue her Doctor of Medicine and working as a GP in hospitals. Moving to Australia thereafter, essentially meant “basically relearning medicine with a new accent!”

Now an incredibly valued member of the Sunshine Coast ED team, which she describes as “truly the best team there is”, Raffi loves the intense, chaotic, and unpredictable nature of her job, where she thrives on the pace, the people, and the real impact she can have on patient’s lives through her inherent kind and positive nature. 🫶

Contrary to her life at work, Raffi’s favourite hobby outside of work is sleep! But after generating sufficient energy from hibernation, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, scuba diving, playing pickleball, enjoying the beach, discovering new cafés, and replenishing her reserves with great coffee. 🤿

We’re so grateful to have this adventurous, dedicated, compassionate, muso doctor on our team!

Meet our World Kidney Day champion, Jamie!

At 23 years old, due to renal failure, his kidney was the size of a 50-cent coin, and he began dialysis 3 times a week to save his life.

A few years later Jamie received the call that changed his life – he was getting a transplant! A kidney he affectionately named Gert (after his nanna who he said was a tough old stick).

“Being able to receive this gift from my hero donor and their family is something I will forever be grateful for as it gave me the opportunity to have children, and now also grandchildren, and travel with Larney, not only in Australia, but also overseas. All of this would not have been possible without the generous gift,” Jamie said.

Gert lasted Jamie a good three decades, before it started declining in 2020. He’s now back on dialysis three times a week at our Renal Unit in Caloundra and is passionate about supporting others on their journey.

This World Kidney Day Jamie is sharing his story with us, to raise awareness about the importance of kidney health and the burden of kidney disease worldwide.

WHOSE PET IS THAT?

This is Lucy. She is an 18-year-old Ragdoll cat who likes to swim. Yes. Swim. Perhaps because her siblings are turtles? She also likes naps and doing nothing all day.

Her mum, on the other hand, does a lot all day. She spends her time organising orientation, education sessions and wellbeing events for the junior doctors at Sunshine Coast Health.

The best part about her job? “Getting to know the junior doctors and watching them grow and become more confident as they progress through training.”

Have you been in the Emergency Department (ED) lately? We hope not, but if you have, and wondered how patients are categorised, we’re here to help! 🙌

EDs are BUSY places, and while we’re resourced to care for our community is best as we can, due to the varying nature of presentations, we need to triage everyone into categories to ensure the most serious cases are seen to quickest.

When you arrive at the ED, you’ll initially be seen by a skilled triage nurse who will determine how urgent your condition is and assign a category from 1 (e.g. cardiac arrest) to 5 (e.g. sprains) according to the Australasian Triage Scale. The wait times will depend on your category. 1 being the shortest wait time and 5 being the longest. ⌛

It can be frustrating when you are waiting longer than other patients, especially when you’re very unwell or in pain but know that the staff is always doing their best to see everyone as quickly as possible. The good news is, if you’re very serious, you will be seen immediately!

If you’re not sure if your medical condition is an emergency, call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84). In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) and ask for an ambulance. 🚑

Dr. Vivienne Moult here is one of the MANY women helping shape the future of healthcare here at Sunshine Coast Health.

Dr. Vivienne is our director of Vascular Surgery. 🩸

If you also don’t know what that means, it’s the branch of health that treats problems with blood vessels; the arteries that carry blood away from the heart and veins that carry blood to the heart.

Blood vessels are responsible for healing wounds, and our vascular team is committed to ensuring they can do this as quickly and effectively as possible, to reduce permanent damage or losses.

Dr. Vivienne and her team were recently awarded funding to help them do just this through a suite of innovative research projects!

This looks like:

💡 Trialing a cutting-edge light-based device that could help stubborn leg wounds heal when other treatments have been unsuccessful.

💉 Refining the Minor Procedure Clinic by studying staff and patient experiences to offer a faster and safer model of outpatient surgery.

🦵 Comparing outcomes of toe amputations performed in clinic versus in theatre to expand access to safe, convenient procedures.

🦶 Reviewing the impact of the High‑Risk Foot Service to show how early specialist care can prevent major amputations and keep people mobile.

This all means more lives and limbs saved through world-class treatment, delivered locally. 🌴

We think Heidi, this week’s Human of Health, is really special. And evidently, so does Des. ☝️

When Des heard we were spotlighting his nurse, he requested a comb and a cameo, because he really believes in the power of recognising hard work and “like[s] putting smiles on people’s faces.” 🪮

Des isn’t the only one who appreciates Heidi’s impeccable care and compassion, she has been described by her patients as “truly special in her chosen field”.

Surprisingly, this almost wasn’t her chosen field. Heidi started a degree in marketing before realising that making a meaningful impact and human connection were central to her values. And she’s never looked back!

“What keeps me here is the relationships you build. With patients during their most vulnerable time, and also with colleagues who are always there to support you. I have made some of my best friends through nursing.”

We’re really grateful to have this piano playing, spontaneous, fun and friendly seamstress being an adaptable, knowledgeable and calm presence for her patients. 🎹 🪡

This week we officially opened our Defence Services Memorial and Commemorative Garden at Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH). 🫡

This project, co-funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Downer, and Exemplar Health, has been in the works for quite some time, so Chair of the Defence Service Network, Glenn, has been caring for the Lone Pine tree at home to ensure it arrived at SCUH healthy and well-established. 👏

If you visit SCUH, come take a moment to pause, read, and reflect on the words on the plaques, in recognition of the service and sacrifice of those who have served, and continue to serve our country.

80 years ago, in 1946, Pam Porter was born at the original Maleny Hospital. 👶

51 years ago, in 1975, she began her remarkable nursing career there. 👩‍⚕️

39 years ago, in 1987, when the new Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital was built, Pam transferred over. 🏥

Today, she’s still at Maleny as an Enrolled Nurse Advance Practice 2 days a week. As for retirement? She’s not quite ready to say when that chapter might begin.

For over five decades, Pam has been a pillar of care in the Maleny community, forming deep bonds with her patients and colleagues, and adapting through ENORMOUS changes in nursing.

“P is for perseverance, you’re never too old to learn new tricks!”
