🎄We often think that at this time of the year, we should be happy and excited, whereas often, many people report feeling extremely stressed, burnt out and lonely. So here’s 6 ways we can better manage the holiday season🎄

🎅🏼1. SET YOUR BOUNDARIES.
Saying no is difficult, but it will also save you a lot of stress and energy. Be thoughtful about what events you attend and where you spend your energy.

🌟2. CHANGING EXPECTATIONS.
There are many traditions people follow around this time of year, but often these traditions might cause us additional stress! Have a think about whether you follow these traditions this year, or do you change things up? Do we do something completely different that might actually bring us more joy than our usual traditions?

🦌3. MAINTAIN SELF CARE ROUTINES.
This can be challenging at this time of year, but will also help to deal with stressors and maintaining your energy. Be mindful to keep as much of a sense of normality as possible - don’t stop doing what maintains you during the year.

🍬4. MANAGING FOOD AND ALCOHOL INTAKE,
We know the impacts that food and alcohol can have on our mood. Usually we find ourselves consuming more than usual around these holiday periods. Absolutely, still enjoy yourself! But know your limits.

✨5. PICK YOUR BATTLES.
You might find yourself at many events this season, especially family events. There’ll be many conversations and “comments” which may trigger us and bring up some very difficult emotions. Be prepared - have an idea of what topics are off limits for you, and give yourself permission to politely disengage from conversations where needed.

😇6. LEND A HELPING HAND.
Volunteering can be a great way to not only do something kind for others, but a great way to connect with others if you find yourself without company this holiday season. This also opens us up to opportunities to meet and possibly establish new social connections that we might want to continue into the new year.

For mental health awareness month, we’re getting around 🥲

Surprisingly, there’s still a lot of stigma, shame and misconceptions around mental health illnesses and seeking support.

is doing an amazing job at helping breakdown these stigmas and barriers by helping to normalise help seeking, and the fact that our emotions are ok. In particular, “it’s cool to cry”. Be vulnerable and share our emotions.

Holding them in. Suffering in silence, is the complete opposite of what we want to be doing. We end up feeling more alone and stuck.

Let’s normalise the fact that it’s cool to cry. It’s normal to cry. Our emotions are our ally’s! And it’s so so incredibly cool to share them with others.

We hope everyone has had some time to rest, reflect, spend time on their own, spend time with loved ones, and start preparing for a transition into the new year!

We understand around this time of year, it can be extremely challenging for many, and for many different reasons 😞

Thats why maintaining our boundaries and self care during this time of year is so important 🙏🏼

Protect your peace. Consider your needs. Reflect, and then communicate these with others🗣️

🤩ONE YEAR OF OPENING DOORS PSYCHOLOGY🤩

And to think, I opened this practice in only ONE MONTH!

To celebrate I had to get something sweet to share with my amazing clients, staff, and of course Herbie 🧁🧡

I honestly have so many people to thank, who all supported me at the drop of a hat to make this happen a year ago! I cannot take all the credit.

A MASSIVE thank you to Milly for guiding, supporting and mentoring me throughout the whole set up process, dealing with my crying and meltdowns, and continuing to support me and check in with me till this very day! I honestly could not have done this without your tremendous support! And for providing me with this amazing opportunity to work alongside you🙏🏼

& her talented sister Bridget for making my logo, branding, image and website come to life! I would have been totally clueless without your amazing creative brains.

my most generous and selfless friend who drove two hours, all the way down to Black Rock to shoot photos of my office, myself and Herbie in the summer heat. Your kind and generous heart means so much to me.

for waking up at the crack of dawn, to help me pack my car and move all the furniture into my office (only 2 days before officially opening for the 1st day), as well as assemble the most frustrating desk on earth. I honestly would have been sitting on an empty floor with my clients, had you not sacrificed your time/weekend to help me put my office together.

And a VERY VERY special, and well deserved thank you to my family, especially my parents who put up with me for an entire month crying, having meltdowns, driving around all over Melbourne to different shops to help buy/pick up furniture, staying up/waking up at all hours helping me research, apply, brainstorm all business things. Your unconditional support through this time means the absolute world to me. Thank you for always encouraging me to follow my dreams (even when they stress you out), and always believing in me. These words will never be enough to show how much thanks and appreciation I have for you both🧡

Last but not least, HERBIE🐶 my fur baby and emotional support dog superstar!! Thank you for being the most kind, adorable, loving, loyal and accepting pup. You truly don’t know how much you touch peoples lives. Your little smile and wagging tail brightens up all of my clients days - even when you are being cheeky and demanding attention in the middle of a session. You truly complete Opening Doors Psychology🧡😊

It had always been a dream of mine to open up my own, little, humble practice, but never did I think I’d be so lucky to be right by the ocean everyday, my happy place, and to work alongside such beautiful souls.

I often have to take a mindful moment to look around and notice where I am and what I am doing, and pinch myself to realise where I am today.

It’s already such a privilege to be a Psychologist and meet so many amazing, unique, interesting individuals from all walks of life, and to (hopefully) make a difference in each persons life who passes through Opening Doors.
