My Story
My product is unique and original and have inherent beauty and tranquillity. Broadly, they might fall into the category of adornments. They are suitable to be used at home, at the office, in cars or anywhere else the purchaser chooses to brighten their environment.
However, they have evolved from trauma. I was a pharmacy assistant when the shop was robbed and was threatened by an aggressive man with a knife. I have an outgoing personality, but the attack left me traumatised and put me into psychological care for a number of years. It also initiated a journey, with my dog Skye, in a campervan up Australia’s East Coast, where I slowly regained my confidence by chatting tentatively to strangers in caravan parks. Eventually my world regained an equilibrium and I was able to do things in the broader environment – simple things, like walking on a beach without feeling exposed and vulnerable. At this time, I started to notice small pieces of driftwood and began to polish and craft them into small ornaments. It became a hobby and an interest. Upon returning to Tasmania I started to collect small pieces of twisted willow and would enhance their natural beauty and add a glass ball lfor contrast. These became my product and friends and relatives love them. Accordingly, Being able to sell my product completes my circle from traumatic anxiety to hand-crafting things of beauty and regained confidence
The backbone of my maker’s craft is the twisted willow. It is a tree imported in colonial times to Australia from England and is now established in the landscape. Although not native, it is an interesting specimen in that it throws up a wide range of possibilities to the maker with an eye to difference and shape. The original shape of the willow determines its particular use. But from there I craft, sand and polish to enhance its natural values in an artistic sense and determine where the glass ball should fit into the broader design. The glass balls are of various colours and reflect light. It gives an interesting juxtaposition of the man-made and the natural. The process is mine entirely – from the selection of the particular piece of twisted willow, through to the choice of the reflective ball and its placement within the piece.
I hope you’ll love these one of a kind products their beauty and the moments of mindfulness each piece gives.
