🛡️ Self-Advocacy is about having a voice — and being heard.
If you receive support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), it’s important to know that you have rights. Understanding and using those rights can help you get support that meets YOUR needs, not just what someone else assumes you need.
Here are some practical self-advocacy tips for NDIS participants:
• ✅ Know your rights — You have the right to choose who supports you, how supports are delivered, and to say no if something doesn’t feel right.
• ❓ Ask questions — If something is unclear (your plan, supports, costs, service delivery), don’t hesitate to ask.
• 🔎 Request explanations when unsure — Understanding what you are entitled to helps avoid confusion or mistakes.
• 👥 Bring a support person to meetings — A trusted friend, family member, carer, or advocate can help when reviewing plans, discussing supports, or raising concerns.
• 📝 Keep notes of conversations — Document any agreements, service details, or issues discussed — this helps if you need to follow up, change services, or raise concerns later.
• 🗣️ Speak up if a service isn’t working — You can request changes, switch providers, or ask for a plan review if supports don’t meet your needs.
Empowerment begins with knowledge — and a willingness to use it.
