There is no greater teacher than a parent and nothing more important than the job we play raising and educating our kids.

It’s not always easy knowing where to start and that’s where I’d like to help :) As a Prep teacher and a mumma of two, I’ve come to understand the importance of fostering their fine motor, literacy and numeracy skills in those first 5 years at home. I’ve tried to include everything in the kit you will need to support your little ones from home in developing their fine motor skills and really be able to ‘hit the ground running’ when they begin school.

Why is fine motor important? Developing fine motor skills is essential in pre-writers and is a vital part of writing, cutting, gluing, opening, closing, tying, and countless other every day and schooling tasks. Having strong fine motor skills means your little one can find success in these areas and will help their confidence and independence grow.

One Little Hands - Ready. Set. Prep. Kit all ready to go for Kyle.

This kit is a special one for me. Kyle’s mummy is a fellow Prep teacher, whose class I actually took over during COVID times when Kyle was in her belly. It makes it just that extra bit special when a colleague see’s value in the kit 🥰 Thank you for your support I hope Kyle loves playing and learning with the kit.

The Little Hands – Ready. Set. Prep. Kit is designed to support your child’s fine motor, literacy and numeracy development. Made specifically for ages 3-6 years, it includes a variety of fun and engaging hands-on resources as well as 25 easy to follow activities for parents. Activities can be tailored to suit the needs of your child and where they are at and of course if you ever have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. 💕

The countdown is on to the start of school. To all of you with a little Preppie starting this year, godspeed. I am thinking of you and there along with you feeling all the feels and reminiscing on times when they weren’t so big (and didn’t give you so much cheek!)

I just wanted to share a few tips you could work on during the next couple of weeks to help prep for Prep.

1. Start working to a routine again

Up, brekky, dressed, and teeth cleaned, before play or tv. Use the clock as a reference point for your little ones. Have a clear system. Test yourself. Can you do all these things by 8am?

2. Work on social and emotional development. Talk through emotions. I can see that’s making you sad, what can we do to make you feel better? I can see that’s making you angry, but it is not ok to hit or throw things. Let’s stay calm and find a way to make it better.

3. Work on self care. Can they go to the toilet and wipe themselves properly? Can they feed themselves from a lunch box? (Unwrap sandwiches, open Tupperware containers, packets or twist top yoghurts) Do they know to drink plenty of water? Are they able to open their bottle and refill it? Can they put on their socks and shoes by themself?

4. Develop fine motor skills - focus on pincer grasp, cutting skills and tracing.

5. Develop gross motor skills - do they have the core strength to sit on a carpet for extended periods of time? Practise sitting cross legged on the carpet and see how your little one goes.

6. Talk to them as much as you can and get them talking back. You want them to be able to communicate as clearly as possible and be able to get their message across to all teachers and helpers.

7. Develop self worth and self confidence. Boost those little beings. You are doing so well. You are amazing. You are a superstar. Look how clever you are doing that all by yourself. Oh I’m so impressed how you solved your own problem. Look at you being kind, I’m sure you just made their day.

7. Read, read, read. The more that you read, that more that they’ll know. The more that they know, the more places they’ll go.

Wishing everyone a huge Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I apologise for being very MIA over the last few months. We moved, which was a mammoth task and then got busy with the silly season and time just flew on by. But, I want to start the new year focusing on things I love and the Little Hands - Ready. Set. Prep. Kits are definitely one of those things.

I’ve made a few changes and have decided to include the Upper and Lower case tracing sheets into the kits as well as numbers to 20 (instead of being an add on). And for the rest of the holidays all kits will be discounted to $49!
