"Neck, shoulder, and upper back tension" and "jaw locking" are closely related through the muscular and structural systems of the body, as follows:
1. Muscle Chains
The muscles in the neck (such as the sternocleidomastoid) and the masticatory muscles (such as the masseter) work closely together. When the neck, shoulder, and upper back muscles are severely tense, it creates a continuous pulling force up to the jaw, causing the jaw muscles to work harder to maintain balance. This results in spasms and cramps in the jaw.
2. Trigger Points
When the neck, shoulder, and upper back are very tense, "trigger points" often occur, which can send referred pain signals to other areas:
Trapezius muscles (in the shoulder muscles) or the muscles on the side of the neck can directly send pain and tension to the jaw and temples.
3. Postural Changes
People with neck, shoulder, and upper back tension often have a "forward head posture":
This posture stretches the muscles under the chin. This pulls the lower jaw backward or open.
To close the mouth completely, the masticatory muscles have to work much harder than normal, leading to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and eventually jaw locking or freezing.
4. Nervous System and Stress
Tension accumulated in the neck, shoulder, and upper back muscles often triggers the body to go into a state of alertness, causing us to unconsciously "clench our teeth" or "clench our jaw" (especially while sleeping or during intense concentration), which is a direct cause of jaw locking.
Relief Guidelines
If jaw locking is caused by neck, shoulder, and upper back tension, treating only the jaw may not be a permanent solution. A combination of treatments should be considered:
Stretch the neck and chest muscles: To reduce jaw pulling.
Massage therapy: Massage to relax the neck, shoulder, and upper back muscles, and acupressure on the masseter muscles can be very helpful.
Posture correction: Pay attention to your working posture and avoid jutting your neck forward.
Summary: If you feel tension in your neck, shoulders, and upper back that starts to spread to your jaw, it means your body is sending a warning signal that the upper muscles are experiencing high levels of accumulated stress. Muscle tension should be addressed promptly before it becomes a chronic problem.
