While caffeine can provide a morning boost, excessive consumption can impact your body's functioning long-term.

It's a natural stimulant that helps with occasional wakefulness. Still, I recommend limiting coffee intake to one cup per day, with the second cup at least 6 hours before bedtime.

Excessive caffeine use can result in sleeplessness, apprehension, migraines, nausea, and irregular heartbeats. It's not a reliable solution for extended periods, especially when dealing with disrupted sleep cycles from shift work.

Staying hydrated is key when working long shifts, and increasing your water intake can help manage fatigue. Tea and coffee are alright in moderation but limit yourself to two coffees a night and avoid all caffeine six hours before bed. Herbal teas like mint and ginger are great throughout your shift, and fruit-infused water is a tasty way to stay hydrated.

Avoid sugary drinks from the vending machine and opt for a kombucha or fruit smoothie instead. And when it's time to wind down after your shift, choose a non- alcoholic beverage like sparkling grape juice or chamomile tea.

Stay healthy and hydrated with these drink tips during night shifts.

Are you struggling with what to eat during your shift work? Here are some tips!

Focus on snacks high in protein, like hummus with carrots, nuts and seeds or Greek yogurt with fruit. For your main meals, include lean protein, whole grain carbohydrates, and plenty of salad and vegetables. Don't forget about healthy fats, such as salmon, avocado, olive oil, and olives, as they support different body functions. Remember, moderation is key!

Let Dog Watch Nutrition help you optimise your nutrition for better health and performance at work.

Are you struggling with what and when to eat when working shifts? Here's a tip:

Eat your main meal before your shift and have smaller meals or snacks if required during the night. Ideally, your body is in fasting mode, so if you can avoid eating between 12am-6am.

For a light meal or snack, try to eat at least 2 hours before bedtime to avoid going to bed on a full stomach. Remember to eat every 3-4 hours if you are hungry and listen to your body's hunger signs.

The food you eat should be used to give you energy and nutrients, not to keep you awake. Don't forget to be mindful of why you are eating and avoid eating out of boredom.

Did you know our biological clock controls our sleep-wake cycle, called the circadian rhythm?

This process is crucial in sending signals to our body systems when it's time to sleep and wake up. The Suprachiasmatic Nucleus in the brain plays a vital role in regulating our circadian rhythm. Factors like brightness, darkness, hormones, genetics, and medications can affect our circadian rhythm changes.

For instance, our body temperature drops in the evening, promoting sleepiness, and rises again in the morning, signalling wakefulness. Understanding your body's circadian rhythm can help improve your sleep quality.

Get your circadian rhythm tested with Dog Watch Nutrition's pathology testing and experience a restful sleep!

Did you know that sleep can be broken down into stages? Understanding the different stages can help you optimise your sleep and overall health.

Stage 1 is the dosing off stage, while
Stage 2 sees your bodily functions slowing down.
Stages 3 and 4 are the Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) stage, where deep sleep occurs, the immune system is activated, and brain function is optimised.
Finally, stage 5 is Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, where dream states occur.

Optimising your sleep can benefit your physical and mental health. Interested in learning more?

Sleep is crucial for our overall health and well-being, but did you know that exposure to blue light from electronic devices and fluorescent lights can disrupt your sleep- wake cycle?

To support a better night's sleep, try powering down your technology 1-2 hours before bed and opting for dim, warm light from lamps. Signals from the optic nerve can dictate the timing of circadian rhythms, and blue light has been shown to stimulate wakefulness, while low, warm light signals darkness and sleepiness.

By reducing exposure to blue light before bedtime, you may improve the amount of time your body spends in NREM and REM sleep.
