An Australian first! This week we did the first-ever EDOF (extended Depth of Focus) ICL in Australia. We were chosen by Staar Surgical and Device Technology to be the first to access this new lens. The lens is based on the ICL I have used for 25 years, so the operation is well-known with an excellent safety profile. As a reversible and additive operation, it gives patients excellent vision and is the preferred option for vision correction for many patients.

Questioning Your Vision? Don’t Go Online.

Doing so could put you at increased risk for vision loss, according to research from the University of California, San Diego.

Presenting at the 127th annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the researchers cautioned that these models are not fine-tuned to provide accurate eye health information.

Considering laser vision correction (LASIK)? Want to save 15%?

Then here is your chance to use the latest most technologically advanced technique, SILK, that reshapes the cornea without disturbing the surface of the eye – so no flap.

For a limited time, we are offering a 15% discount on SILK for patients participating in our 'Patient Experience Program'. This equates to a saving of over $1,000 for bilateral surgery (both eyes).
Limited to 20 patients or six weeks, whichever comes first.

The Key Benefits of SILK Vision Correction are:
+ No-Flap - No flap-related complications.
+ Faster visual recovery
+ Better visual outcome due to better centration and astigmatism alignment
+ Better quality of vision because the Femtosecond Laser allows High Definition Vision treatment profile with better Depth of Focus
+ HD Vision Correction – More comfortable vision due to faster and superior corneal nerve regeneration and improved tear film stability
+ Minimal downtime, i.e. resume work 2-3 days post-laser, swimming after 2 weeks, contact sports after 2 weeks vs. 4 weeks post-LASIK

The December holiday period is notorious for road accidents – usually put down to speeding, tiredness, and drink/drug driving.

But did you know that unaddressed, common eye conditions – like short-sightedness, cataract and glaucoma – can also be the cause of accidents for drivers and pedestrians alike?

Before you take to the roads this Christmas, book an eye test to ensure your eyes are up to speed.

A simple procedure, like SMILE laser surgery to correct shortsightedness, or cataract surgery with lens replacement for cataract, could be all you need to be safe and spectacle free.

In the meantime, if you need glasses or contact lenses for driving, it’s important (and a legal requirement) to wear them while you’re on the road.

We wish you a wonderful festive season!

Got your eye on the ball?

There’s plenty of speculation about how playing e-games can improve your hand eye coordination. But if you’re really looking to improve your ability on the court or field, there’s nothing better than to get active, according to a great study from the University of Waterloo.

“Athletes involved in sports with a high-level of movement – like soccer, football, or baseball – often score higher on dynamic visual acuity tests than non-athletes,” said Dr. Kristine Dalton of Waterloo’s School of Optometry & Vision Science. “Our research team wanted to investigate if action video gamers – who, like e-sport athletes, are regularly immersed in a dynamic, fast-paced 2-D video environment for large periods of time – would also show superior levels of dynamic visual acuity on par with athletes competing in physical sport.”

“Ultimately, athletes showed a stronger ability to identify smaller moving targets, which suggests visual processing differences exist between them and our video game players,” said Alan Yee, a PhD candidate in vision science.”

Ultimately, Dalton says while there’s still a benefit to training in a 3-D environment, “For athletes looking to develop stronger visual skills, the broader visual field and depth perception that come with physical training may be crucial to improving their dynamic visual acuity – and ultimately, their sport performance.”

Whether you’re a budding sportsperson or not, great vision is great for life. Find out about your options. Contact me on (02) 8080 2180 or visit drversace.com.au

Protect your sight, protect your brain

Worsening clarity of vision, difficulty perceiving contrasts and differences in depth have been associated with increased risk of cognitive decline, according to a longitudinal study published in JAMA. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8285732/

Among 1202 older adults, without dementia, researchers found greater declines in language and memory domain scores among those with worse visual acuity and stereo acuity impairment. Additionally, decreased language, memory, attention, and visuospatial ability domain scores were associated with worse contrast sensitivity.

There are many reasons behind impaired vision and regular eye examinations with your optometrist will ensure any eye health issues are identified early so that you can be treated experiencing more significant vision loss.

A decreased ability to perceive contrast may be a sign of cataract – a clouding of the normally transparent and flexible lens of the eye. This condition usually develops with age, interfering with light entering the eye, and affecting your ability to see clearly. Left untreated, people with cataracts may eventually go blind.

Treatment involves surgery on the affected eye to remove the clouded lens and insert a replacement artificial intraocular lens.

SMILE vision correction is the most advanced form of laser vision correction. As keyhole surgery it leaves the eye stronger and there is minimal down time. This video explains how SMILE works.
https://vimeo.com/635005402

Sometimes vision takes a little longer to recover with SMILE (as compared with LASIK) and the exact reason for this has been elusive. Research from late 2020 may help our understanding of healing after SMILE. SMILE is kinder on the eye than other laser techniques - there is less inflammation (as shown by reduced inflammatory markers) but there may be a more active healing response as shown in this animal study where levels of tissue markers TGF-β1 and BFGF where actually higher in SMILE corneas than LASIK corneas after surgery. These tissue factors promote rapid healing and wound repair. Ironically this faster healing with a rapid return to corneal strength may be associated with slower visual recovery with transient increased stromal density.

A slight delay in visual recovery may turn out to be a positive thing with faster healing!
