Have you heard of the Sunflower?

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple but powerful way for people to share that they may have a disability or condition that isn’t immediately visible. By choosing to wear the Sunflower, individuals can signal that they might need a little extra time, support, or understanding in everyday situations, whether that’s in shops, at work, on public transport, or out in the community.

Globally, 1 in 6 people live with disability, and many of these are not visible. These can include neurological, cognitive, sensory, and chronic health conditions, ranging from autism and ADHD to chronic pain, diabetes, and sleep disorders. Disabilities can also be temporary or situational, and each person’s experience and support needs are unique.

The Sunflower helps make the invisible visible in a respectful and discreet way. You might see the sunflower in the form of a pin badge, a wristband, or a lanyard around someone’s neck. It’s a small symbol with a big impact, encouraging awareness, inclusion, and kindness in everyday interactions. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

The NDIA has launched a Guide Dog Provider List to make it easier for participants to find trusted dog guide services and compare providers.

The list includes providers who meet key standards, including registration with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, accreditation with the International Guide Dog Federation, and qualified staff to deliver dog guide services.

It gives participants, families, and carers clear, accessible information on dog guides, related products, and provider service agreements, helping you make informed choices.

You can still stay with your current provider or choose any other provider; the list is there to provide extra guidance.

For more info, contact the NDIA’s Sector Capability Projects team at SectorCapabilityProjects@ndis.gov.au.

The NDIA has announced the start of its Quality Supports Therapy Pilot. The 12-month pilot will help the agency better understand what is involved in delivering quality therapy services under the NDIS, including the work required, the workforce involved, and the outcomes for participants.

Grant funding will be shared with participating therapy providers who will work with the NDIA during the pilot. This is one of three pilots under the Quality Supports Program, alongside pilots focused on Supported Independent Living and Support Coordination. The results will help inform future pricing reviews under the NDIA’s Three-Year Pricing Workplan (2025–28).

Budgeting can be difficult in any situation, let alone when navigating a complex system like the NDIS. Participants are often learning new terminology, working out who does what, and understanding which services they can access with their funding. On top of that, every support needs to fit within a defined budget, which can quickly feel overwhelming.

Understanding your NDIS budget from the beginning can make a significant difference. Knowing how your funding is structured, whether your budgets are flexible or stated, and how funding periods work can help you avoid overspending and ensure your support lasts for the full length of your plan.

Small misunderstandings early on can sometimes lead to larger issues later. Taking the time to set up clear service agreements and track your spending regularly helps keep everything on track.

Don’t get caught out. These are the key areas of focus when planning your budget.
• Understand your plan.
• Are your budgets stated or flexible?
• Do you have funding periods?
• Always have service agreements in place.
• Seek support and guidance when needed.

What do the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (PAPL) detail?

The PAPL is a document that ensures participants and providers understand how price controls work in the NDIS. The PAPL does not detail price rates; it details price caps, that is, the maximum a provider can charge for a specific service or support when they meet all the requirements.

This is really important to remember!

Every participant can negotiate pricing with their providers, no matter how their funding is managed. Participants who are plan or agency managed cannot pay more than the maximum price set by the PAPL, and all participants can negotiate a lower price than what is outlined in the PAPL.

Unfortunately, misleading advertising is everywhere NDIS participants look. The good news is that there are practical steps participants and nominees can take to reduce the risk of being misled. A few checks before purchasing can protect your funding and prevent unnecessary stress.

Here’s how to safeguard yourself in the NDIS marketplace and always report misleading conduct to the ACCC or NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

Misleading advertising in the NDIS doesn’t just cause confusion, it can have real financial consequences for participants. It would be easy for new NDIS participants and nominees to think that if something is advertised as “NDIS covered,” it must be safe to purchase. Unfortunately, this is not true and incredibly misleading.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has raised serious concerns about misleading advertising within the NDIS marketplace. False claims about what is “NDIS approved” or “100% funded” are creating confusion for participants and families. Here’s what the regulator has identified and what every participant should be wary of.

Providers supporting NDIS participants have a responsibility to deliver supports in line with a participant’s plan. This includes confirming the participant has the correct support budget for the services being provided, ensuring the support is an NDIS for the participant, and checking that there is sufficient funding available within each funding period.

This has always been a requirement. However, with the introduction of funding periods, it is even more important. When multiple providers share the same funding budget and a participant has funding periods in place, clear service agreements are critical to prevent over servicing.

The NDIS website states on their FAQs page, under “Providers”: “Under NDIS legislation, claims exceeding the available funding in a support category in the current funding period cannot be paid.”

Over servicing is described by the NDIA as “when services are delivered beyond the allocated budget for a given funding period, with the expectation that the claim will be paid using the next funding period’s allocation.”

Avoiding over servicing ensures continuity of supports and reduces financial risks for both participants and providers.
