[kar-thi-a] in Greek meaning heart.

Let's talk openly about your experiences with infertility, assisted reproduction, IVF, grief and loss, and identity in a space where you can show up as your whole self and speak freely.

As a therapist with lived experience in this space, I understand the process, nuances and toll it can take. This means that you won’t need to spend valuable therapy time explaining the ins and outs, process or acronyms to me, and ensures that we can maximise our time together.

Yours in healing,
Nat ♡

Practising self compassion can help us to handle difficult thoughts and feelings more effectively and allow us to appreciate the fulfilling aspects of life.

This approach draws on a counselling technique known as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

ACT involves actively accepting our good and painful experiences: thoughts, feelings, memories and so on, and taking action to improve our situation as much as possible. It's not about toxic positivity, pretending everything is fine and hiding our true feelings, it's about acknowledgement and acceptance that life can be tough, and that we can arm ourselves with the tools to cope through exploration, awareness and acceptance of thoughts, feelings and emotions - both good and bad.

📍 Let's explore those experiences in a safe space. Kardia Collective specialises in infertility counselling for women in Australia. New clients welcome, no waitlists or referral needed.

When life is hard, difficult thoughts and feelings show up. And no more so than during the infertility, IVF and assisted reproduction process. There's no way to avoid the difficult feelings BUT we can unlock ourselves from them.

Sit with them. Allow them to come and go as they are, regardless of whether they are pleasant or painful. When we drop the struggle with painful thoughts and feelings, we can gain more control and clarity about how we face challenges and work with what we can control.

Acceptance means opening up to our inner experiences (thoughts, images, memories, feelings, emotions, urges, impulses, sensations) and allowing them to be as they are, regardless of whether they are pleasant or painful.

When we open up and make room for these inner experiences with gentle self-compassion, drop the struggle with them, and allow them to freely come and go, in their own time (much like the rain!) we can learn to accept who we are and embrace change more freely.

What does hope look like if we take a step back from it? Can you think of a time you felt hopeful in the past? Tap into those feelings... were they feelings of excitement, happiness, promise or contentment?

During a challenging experience like IVF for example which is shrouded in uncertainty, thinking back to feelings of hope in the past can activate a positive feeling for the present moment. This is a form of mindful gratitude in practice.

What can I do to make change happen today? You don't actually have to have the answer to make yourself feel better! Just by asking yourself this question, you're creating a 'stop and think' moment to break intrusive or unhelpful thinking and challenge negativity bias.

Intrusive rumination is the experience of negative thoughts on rotation without an end in sight. This feeling can be overwhelming, heavy and hopeless, but a simple change to our thinking can flip this experience. Deliberate rumination is the cultivation of better, or more helpful thoughts.

The simple act of asking yourself the question 'how can I make change (to my thinking, behaviour, feelings etc) happen, creates a moment of choice in your consciousness that gives you a 'stop and think' moment on how to potentially deal with something.

Self-image is how we see or perceive ourselves - it affects how we think, feel and behave in the world. Self-awareness is recognising that we place these judgements on ourselves.

The assisted reproduction process can stir up a lot of attachment to self-criticism as there are often no answers about why things may not be working. If you feel like it today, try to look inwards, embrace the sun, and remember how resilient you are in your adversity.

Take a moment to look inwards. A simple 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise can help. Take a deep breath in and out, and identify 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can touch, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.

Most of our conscious brain is dedicated to focusing on the outside world: getting along with others and making plans for the future. Studies have shown that one of the ways to consciously access the motional brain is through self awareness.

This can be achieved through mindfulness or meditation. Take a moment to look inwards and befriend yourself.
