Saying that we have to ‘break’ a bad habit, doesn’t give us an accurate picture of what’s really going on inside our brains when we form the behaviour in the first place! Bad habits form in response to a real need. For instance, we seek to soothe our anxiety by biting our nails, overeating, or smoking/va**ng. While the habit is unhealthy and unwanted—and it may not give us relief for very long, anyway—the behaviour helps us cope! Our brains develop pathways between the need and the habit that gives us relief, which makes it extremely difficult to stop.

So how do we undo that or interrupt our attachment to an old behaviour that’s bad for us? The answer is to replace it with a healthier one that will help us to achieve a similar goal.
