In a new partnership, our Network and John Hunter Children's Hospital have joined forces with NSW Ambulance to expand the reach of our virtualKIDS service even further through a state-wide referral pathway.

The Referral Pathway to virtualKIDS is an Australian first connecting ambulance clinicians with specialist paediatricians, clinical nurse consultants and registered nurses from our hospitals to provide virtual assessment and care in the patient’s home

β€œWorking with NSW Ambulance paramedics and the Virtual Clinical Care Centre helps us get the best results for families. It also prevents the need for hospital visits, which can be stressful for children or too far for families in remote and regional areas” Amie Donnelly, Nurse Unit Manager, Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, said.

The virtualKIDS Urgent Care Service has been operating for more than two years and can assess and manage various conditions such as mild respiratory infections, gastroenteritis and fevers using video consultations. It is available 24/7 and enables families to access care faster while avoiding unnecessary trips to the Emergency Department.

If your child is unwell and you’re not sure where to turn, call healthdirect on 1800 022 222, anytime day or night. For support in your language, call the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450 and ask for

Navigating a chronic illness or disability can be challenging, and at times isolating. For Lani and Charlotte, they found strength and solidarity in shared experience.

After being diagnosed with idiopathic thoracic scoliosis in 2017, Charlotte felt like no one could understand what she was going through. Similarly, Lani, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2019, struggled to find anything online that felt relatable.

"Anytime that I would search up lupus, or chronically ill adolescent, it was something written by an adult or a doctor, and that wasn't really what I was looking for, that's not something I can relate to," Lani said.

Inspired by their own lived experience, Lani and Charlotte, alongside their counterparts Joel and Charlie, and the help of teams across our Network, created a podcast, Chronic Conundrums, to answer all of the questions and quandaries about chronic illness and disability.

The podcast creates space for conversations on a range of experiences, from diagnosis and hospitalisations, through to treatment and health care transition services.

"Our intention with the podcast was to really encapsulate the journey. Whilst there are so many different experiences, we wanted to highlight what resonated with all of us as a team," Charlotte said.

As a child safe organisation, our Network is committed to providing opportunities, like this, for children and young people to have their voices heard and valued in a safe and empowering way.

You can listen to Chronic Conundrums anywhere you find your podcasts!

COOL TIP: There are plenty of sunscreen brands on the market, but do you know how to store it once you get home?
Former AMA (NSW) president and dermatologist Saxon Smith conducted groundbreaking research into sunscreen and found most people were unaware it needed to be stored below 25 degrees to remain effective.
That means no keeping it permanently in your car's glovebox.
Stay safe this summer and keep melanoma at bay.
Let's do it for Saxon.
