Autism doesn’t need a “cure.” It needs understanding, acceptance and support. Stigmatising autism harms Autistic and neurodivergent people and pushes inclusion backwards.

Recent claims linking paracetamol use during pregnancy to autism are false. When leaders spread this misinformation, it is structural violence, an effort to control pregnant people’s bodies, limit safe care and increase gendered blame. Women and gender-diverse people with disability already face high rates of violence and medical gaslighting. Debunked pregnancy myths pile guilt onto mothers, deter essential care like fever control, and set inclusion back.

We know rhetoric like this can be distressing for members of our community, support is available:

Text reads: “Claims linking paracetamol use during pregnancy to autism are false and harmful. Autism should be understood, accepted and supported. It’s not something to ‘prevent’ or ‘cure’. This narrative increases the risk of stigma and harm to women, pregnant people and Autistic people.”]

You may have seen claims circulating that taking paracetamol (Tylenol) during pregnancy “causes” autism, or that autism can be “cured.”

Today, Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) reaffirmed that there is no proven link between paracetamol and autism, and that paracetamol remains safe to use in pregnancy when needed.

But beyond the science, we know how hurtful this kind of misinformation can be. Parents may be left questioning if they did something “wrong.” Autistic people may be made to feel as though their lives are “less than.”

That’s why we want to say clearly:
Autism is not something to be “cured.”
Autism is not anyone’s “fault.”
Autistic people are a natural and valuable part of human diversity.

We are with the autistic community, today and every day. 💙
