Our wise colleagues have been busy!! New research just released on dietetic supervision 👏

Tara Crow, Claire Palermo, Laura Kiely & Deanne Harris reviewed 51 studies (!!) and made it super clear that

➡️ Supervision isn’t just for early career dietitians
➡️ It’s meant to be regular, reflective, and support you throughout your career
➡️ It improves our practice AND our wellbeing (therefore ultimately our client outcomes)

I’ve said a gazilion times 🫢 that I wouldn’t still be practicing if I haven’t had supervision throughout my career. Which is why I love it when I can supervise others 😍

🪷If you’ve been thinking about it, feel free to get in touch and we can see if we are a good fit 😌

I hear these things a lot in sessions from clients who are trying their best.

“It’s just easier to not do it”
“I wish someone was there”

Eating can feel hard, even when you so want to Do. The. Thing.

Feeding yourself can feel overwhelming when you’re navigating anxiety, run out of spoons, or experience a tricky relationship with food, just to name a few. So that’s why I’m offering a gentle online meal support space — so you don’t have to do it on your own.

✨ come as your are - no need to perform
✨no monitoring- you can bring what you want and finish what you want
✨ No pressure to talk if you don’t want to
✨ just show up to the space — and eat with others in the same boat.

I’ll offer some gentle regulation and prompting along the way, that you can take or leave.

This might be an opportunity to offer yourself a little room to do things differently… and move you closer towards your goals, whatever they might be in your story.

When people walk in the door, or come online with me, I’ll gently ask “how are you feeling about being here today together?”

Often, the answer is “I’m feeling a little/really/really really nervous and/or anxious!”

However you feel is so completely normal.

Why? We are human.

A few reasons I hear a lot:

✨ I’m not sure what to expect
✨ I’ve had not great experiences with Dietitians/other health practitioners before
✨ I don’t know if I want to be here
✨ I don’t think I can be helped
✨ I always feel anxious meeting new people
✨ I’ve never spoken about this stuff before

I really value spending as much time as you need to chat about what makes you feel safe and supported in a relationship.

⏩ I’d love to hear from you about your experiences. Let me know below if you’re keen 👇🏻

But it doesn’t have to feel that way! 💕

When I graduated, I worked in community health dietetics.

It got to a point where I felt disenchanted, and would often think to myself “what am I doing?”

What’s the point?

Something doesn’t add up.

I don’t get it.

I want to support people, but is this all there is?

I was questioning a lot;

- myself as a practitioner (why aren’t people coming back? Why are people getting defensive? Why aren’t people engaging in session?”

- the profession (why do we have a bad reputation? Why is this not how I expected things to be? What I was taught doesn’t make sense…..)

Although my workplace was supportive from a professional point of view, these were things I didn’t feel I could talk about. I didn’t have a space to talk about this openly.

Some of this could be explored in personal therapy. But what was missing was a space to explore my place in the profession and how I could utilize my personality traits, qualities, experience and my values to support others.

And, more importantly, to understand that there was nothing wrong with me.

It wasn’t until I left dietetics, worked in health promotion and prevention, and then re-entered dietetics in private practice that some shifts happened:

- I found a community of dietitians with a similar journey and with similar values

- I entered into Supervision from day 1 where I could explore my practice openly in a safe and non judgmental space. I wasn’t only showing up everyday but I was growing and thriving. As a dietitian and a human.

Now I am where I need to be. And always growing and learning.

Theres probably more I could add, but this is my brain dump for now 😆

Dietitians, do you relate? 🫣👇🏻

D i e t i t i a n s

You may not be for everyone.

And that’s ok.

We are humans supporting other humans.

We are not all robots.

We are not all the same.

We bring our own unique experiences, personalities, ways of relating, approaches to our work.

And the human in front of us brings their own.

I hear you.

It’s completely normal to feel the pull towards wanting things to be different and also feeling like you don’t want things to change.

Your behaviors feel safe and comfortable. They could even be keeping you safe.

Change means doing hard things. It feels almost impossible. If you are not doing these behaviors, what does that mean for you? Your life? Who you are?

Change happens at the edge of our comfort zone 🌱

You don’t need to have all the answers, and you don’t have to be sure you want things to be different when you seek support- providing a space to explore this uncertainty is part of supporting you.

I’d feel honored to share this space with you.
