Dealing with OCD impacts the whole family. It rarely exists in isolation. You may find yourself accommodating compulsions just to keep the peace and keep the rest of the family moving. You may also fairly be utterly exhausted by it all! Where to start? Our clinic is hosting a free live webinar for parents of kids and teens with OCD! It’s on Thursday July 24th. Register via the QR code pictured. You don’t have to do this alone.

What a marathon! Just completed a 6 hour presentation on treating OCD for a lovely psychology practice. We discussed all things OCD including differential diagnoses, the evolution of treatment from cognitive models, I-CBT, the inhibitory learning model, and ACT based approaches to ERP, and strategies on how to treat OCD. Keen to learn more? Follow the links in my bio to arrange supervision, customised training for you or your team, or to sign up to my training on the website. It takes on average 11-14 years for people with OCD to get effective treatment. Let’s change that together. 💫

Today I had the pleasure of recording training content for Deakin University, my old stomping ground! It was fantastic being able to record content on how to work with young people with OCD session by session. It was also incredibly nostalgic being back at Deakin and seeing how much has changed in the last 15 years. This first photo is the new psychology building, which did not exist when I was a student there, while the building in the second photo is where my fellow doctoral students and I had our common room while completing our post-grad studies back in the day. So many late nights, tears, and take out sessions while running stats and writing our theses were had in this building.

Intensive ERP focused treatment can be a really helpful way to break the loop that is OCD. Our group therapy programs for teens and adults are a great way to help break those loops. The groups complement one on one work and provide a safe setting where participants can learn from each other to tackle OCD. The bonus is that attending groups don’t impact referrals for one on one work. Group therapy is accessed under a separate referral, allowing you to access an extra 10 sessions if you’re eligible for Medicare. Use the QR codes in these images to register. Group starts in the first full week of May so get in quick to ensure your spot.

What’s on your ERP bingo card? Here are some ideas you could think about if you’re in treatment for Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Like anything, discuss it with your treating clinician, plan it out and see where it takes you. Remembering that consistency and variety is key when it comes to ERP. 💫

“Let go of certainty. The opposite isn’t uncertainty. It’s openness, curiosity and a willingness to embrace paradox, rather than choose up sides” - Tony Schwartz, founder and CEO of The Energy Project.

People with OCD often struggle with black-and-white thinking and the need for certainty. Tony Schwartz’s idea of embracing paradox, openness, and curiosity can be helpful as it helps us articulate why we do what we do when it comes to ERP — but only if applied without falling into the reassurance trap!

Instead of seeking answers, try the following:

❌ “I don’t need to be 100% certain because I checked once.” (Reassurance)
✅ “I’d like certainty, but I can cope without it.” (Openness)

❌ “This discomfort will pass, so I don’t need to worry.” (Reassurance)
✅ “This discomfort is here. I notice it in my body. I am choosing to lean into it.” (Tolerance)

❌ “I can have intrusive thoughts and still be a good person.” (Reassurance)
✅ “Maybe this thought means something, maybe it doesn’t.” (Acceptance of uncertainty)

The goal isn’t to resolve doubt but to make peace with it. Freedom comes from learning to coexist with uncertainty, not from eliminating it.

And that’s a wrap on the leadership program with Inspiring Girls Australia! The girls made some wonderful reflections and one of the biggest takeaways today was HOPE.

A hope that they don’t silence themselves because someone else is trying to silence them.

A hope that they can keep giving themselves permission to dream.

Hope that they give themselves permission to change their minds.

Hope that they keep exploring and being brave enough to take risks, challenges, experiences, and to chase their desires with confidence.

What a pleasure and privilege it is to be working alongside amazing women to help inspire our next generation and break those cycles. 💫

I absolutely love presenting with my friend and colleague 🥰. Here we are talking all things leadership for .secondary.college. The young students were so engaged and shared some valuable insights into what it takes to become a leader. The Dream Gap starts as young as 6 years old so these discussions are vital. Girls as young as six stop dreaming about career and aspirations whereas boys keep thriving. These conversations beed to keep changing and growing to enable young women to thrive.

Are you using coping statements instead of coaching statements? What’s the difference?

Coping = “It’s my thoughts, I am safe” - leans into reassurance which is unhelpful as it reinforces the OCD cycle.

Coaching = “I’m having the thought that …….”, “I’m feeling ……”, “I am capable of handling hard moments, I am resilient” - leans into labelling emotions and experiences, as well as thought content which creates an opportunity for exposure and a moment to help build tolerance and stamina against OCD. 💫

I remember graduating from university and feeling like a fish out of water! 😧 My training at the OCD inpatient program at The Melbourne Clinic and 15 years of working with people with OCD allowed me to learn the nuances of working with people and families impacted by OCD.
- what does it look like?
- what does it sound like?
- what’s driving it?
- what’s the impact of it?
All of these questions as well as many others are important to ask especially since OCD is HIGHLY co-occurring with MANY other mental health difficulties such as Generalised Anxiety, Social Phobia, ADHD, Autism, Eating Disorders, OCPD, the list goes on. If you’re new to treating OCD or you’re a seasoned clinician and are feeling a bit stuck, get in touch via the link in my bio to get out of the loop.
