There aren’t many surgeon couples around, let alone surgeon couples who practise in the same specialty and work in the same hospital. Despite this, we don’t operate together that often, but we make a pretty good team when we do.

Artificial Intelligence Polyp Detection has arrived in the Southern Highlands.
Flat and small precancerous bowel polyps can be hard to recognise during colonoscopy and may sometimes be missed. Polyp AI identifies areas of the bowel wall that may contain a polyp, based on a comparison to thousands of polyp images. Your surgeon can then inspect the area and confirm the presence of a polyp. Bowel cancers develop from precancerous polyps, so any improvements in polyp detection should help to reduce the rates of bowel cancer.

A Sentinel Node Biopsy is a procedure used to assess cancer spread from breast cancers and some melanomas. The sentinel node is the first lymph node (or nodes) to which a cancer spreads. On the day prior to surgery, a small amount of radioactive material is administered near the cancer to track the sentinel node. To confirm the sentinel node's location, a blue dye is injected around the cancer immediately before surgery, causing the sentinel node to turn blue. During surgery, we look for the blue dye and utilize a device that detects radiation to locate the sentinel node. This procedure allows us to determine the extent of cancer spread without the need for extensive lymph node removal. In this case the sentinel node biopsy was for melanoma.
