Puppies start to loose their teeth around 14-16 weeks of age. Here you can see Muse has a wobbly top incisor.
Its the perfect time to get them used to playing with their mouth, and knowing what their "normal" is.
Some dogs can have a little trouble dropping their baby canines, so keep monitoring that these come out as the adult tooth erupts.
Provide lots of safe chewing to help massage the gums, help the teeth drop out when its their time and help keep the jaws healthy and strong.

Yeah, this photo is hard for me to look at too.

Your dogs mouth should never get to this point. There are ways to identify early dental disease.

Do a weekly home check.
Lift the lips, look at the gumline, and take a quick sniff of their breath.
It takes 60 seconds but can save years of discomfort and expensive vet bills.

Your dog can’t tell you when their mouth hurts, but you can spot the signs early.

Bad breath isn’t always just a mouth problem. Sometimes it starts in the gut.

An imbalanced gut microbiome can feed bad bacteria in the mouth, leading to odour and inflammation.

Supporting digestion with probiotics, fresh whole foods, and herbs helps the mouth too!

Did you know? Small breeds and flat-faced (brachycephalic) dogs are the most prone to dental disease.
Crowded teeth and poor gum circulation make them especially vulnerable to plaque and gum inflammation.

That’s why prevention is so important, especially if you share life with a Cavoodle, Pug, Chihuahua, or similar breed.

Dogs are born to chew, and for good reason!
Chewing helps scrape plaque off teeth, massage the gums, and stimulate saliva flow (which naturally helps control bacteria).

Raw meaty bones (safely chosen), tendon chews, or even textured toys can all help keep those teeth shining.

Could your dog’s gums be quietly struggling?
Look for:
-Redness along the gumline
-Bleeding when chewing
-Avoiding hard food or toys
-Persistent bad breath

Catching gum inflammation early makes all the difference. A simple “lip lift” check once a week is a great habit.

Healthy gums don’t just mean a healthy mouth.
Healthy gums protect your dog’s whole body.

Bacteria from inflamed gums can travel through the bloodstream and affect the heart, kidneys, and liver.

Think of the gums as your dog’s foundation. Strong gums helps support a strong, healthy dog.

Plaque is soft, sticky, and invisible.
It starts forming on your dog’s teeth within hours of eating.
If it’s not removed, minerals in the saliva harden it into tartar (that yellow-brown build-up you can see).

The tricky part? Once it’s tartar, it often takes professional cleaning to remove.

Tip: Regular mechanical cleaning (like chewing or wiping teeth) helps keep plaque from ever turning into tartar.

You brush.

You feed raw.

You avoid processed food.

And yet, your dog still develops tartar or gum inflammation. It’s frustrating and disheartening.

Here’s why it happens:

Genetics and jaw structure – Small breeds or brachycephalic dogs often have crowded teeth and poor gum circulation.

Immune health and inflammation – Dogs with leaky gut, allergies, or systemic inflammation are more prone to chronic gum issues.

Constitution and mineral metabolism – Some dogs have weaker mineral metabolism or poor assimilation, affecting bones and teeth.

Developmental setbacks – If a pup missed key nutrients during gestation or weaning, dental tissues may have formed less robustly.

Some dogs just need more dental support than others.
