Reason number 3567 why its important to have a strong "leave it" command.

This is a full jar of dog treats i keep at my front door. I was in a rush and dropped it as I was trying to put the lid back on.
The whole thing smashed, leaving tiny glass shards and fragments through the whole lot of treats.

I have three dog, a German shepherd, German shepherd x border collie and our newest baby Muse, cav x poodle

They were pretty engaged with me given I was getting treaties.

As soon as it dropped, I had to control all three dogs verbally, to leave the really high value treats whilst I went to the other side of the room to get the broom and dustpan and brush.... then walk down the other end of the house because the broom hadn't been put away....

All the while having three dogs unrestrained as the treats and glass lay all over the floor.

This was an emergency situation and I had to be able to manage this with unrestrained dogs. The stakes were pretty high if they didnt listen.

Why didnt I just put them all outside whilst I cleaned it up? That would mean having to walk them all through the mess.

A Super important life skill for a dog.
Which made a stressful situation easy to manage and resolve quickly.

I need to rethink my treat storage!

We talk a lot about “supporting the gut.”

But before we can repair or strengthen anything, we need to understand what’s disrupting it in the first place.

Digestive upset that keeps returning.
Itchy skin and ears.
Inflammation that never quite settles.
Behaviour changes that seem disconnected, but they really are

The gut plays a central role in digestion, immune regulation, inflammation, and even the stress response.

Gut Health Foundations is a free 5-day guided educational series designed to help you understand how your dog’s gut influences whole-body health, and how to approach support for your dog.

The waitlist is now open.

What actually damages the canine microbiome?
Dive into the common stressors that shift your dog’s gut from balanced to dysbiotic. From medications and diet issues to environmental exposures and chronic stress. Learn what to watch for and how to support recovery in our 4-minute read. Read more: https://wix.to/4hkfJFm

We often focus on supporting the gut, but before we can restore balance, we need to understand what disrupts it. There are several minerals which I see low in homeprepared diets.
Zinc, copper, Vitamin D and Vitamin E are generally the most commonly deficinent.

You cannot feed muscle meat and vegetables, and/or grains and expect to meet all of your pets nutrient needs. We need to use organs, nutrient dense foods like sardines, oysters, tripe, or supplement.

Zinc is often overlooked in Animal gut health

This trace mineral plays a critical role in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity, supporting mucosal repair, and regulating immune responses within the digestive tract.

Gut support isn’t only about probiotics, or soothing irritation, we also need to provide the structural nutrients the body needs to heal the tissues, and create resiliant and robust tissue integrity

Think the gut is just for digestion? Think again.
The digestive system influences immunity, behaviour, skin health, detoxification and metabolic balance, making it central to whole-body wellness. Read our latest blog to learn why gut support is often the first step in holistic care. https://wix.to/g1rfHJ3

When we think about the digestive system, we often picture food being broken down and nutrients being absorbed. But the gut is far more than a digestive tube. The gastrointestinal tract acts as the most multifunctional system for whole-body health, influencing immunity, behaviour, skin, detoxificatio...

Some days are just magic.

I took some.photos of Muse at the beach today, whilst waiting for my daughters dance class. When looking back through I found this picture with the Sea Eagle that was hanging about. You can see it in the top left corner.
The eagle is also moulting, we could see missing feathers as it soared past.
I was lucky enough to find on of these wing feathers.
So special.

Today is World Cancer Day.

Did you know that dogs experience a similar cancer risk to humans, however I think there is much more cancer occuring in dogs that goes undiagnosed, so I believe their risk is higher.
Around 1 in 4 dogs will develop cancer at some point during their life, and this risk increases to 1 in 2 for dogs 10 years or older.

For cats, their risk is slighly lower at 1 in 5, which I think is still too high!

Eek! This is a scary statistic.

Lets use this to empower our choices as custodians of our creatures.

Looking at their nutrition. Are we nourishing for health, or metabolic dysfunction? Optimal nutrition throughout their lives helps reduce this risk.

What about the toxin load they are exposed to? Are there toxins which we can avoid? Can we support channels of elimination when they do have a toxin exposure? Sometimes these things are unavoidable.

We can work preventatively with your pet. Preventative care is the best care, for all aspects of health.

but what if your pet is already one of the unlucky ones?
Then we switch focus, and work collaboratively with any other therapies you choose to undertake- conventional or holistic.

No two cancer journeys are the same, and we always make the best choices we can with the information we have.

We can’t eliminate all risk factors, but we can support resilience.
Nourishing the body, reducing unnecessary burden, and working with the whole animal creates a stronger foundation for health.

Reach out if you need support on this journey.

Kittens don’t have “mini adult” digestive systems.

Their gut, microbiome, and immune system are still developing, which makes them particularly sensitive to parasites, dietary transitions, stress, and environmental change.

Digestive upset in kittens is common, and how we support the gut in early life can influence immune function, food tolerance, and gut resilience long-term.

This infographic walks through the most common gut health challenges seen in kittens, and why early, gentle gut support is so important.

A valuable read for anyone raising a kitten or working with young cats.
