Entrusting your eggs, s***m or embryos to someone else’s care can feel like one of the biggest steps in your fertility journey. That’s why we’ve built an embryology team approach designed to give you complete confidence – combining precision, expertise and extra layers of care through:

✨ Pair work – every lab procedure is performed by two embryologists, ensuring ‘four eyes’ oversee each critical step. This enhances accuracy, safeguards biological material and fosters ongoing professional development
✨ Rigorous training – new embryologists undergo a two-year continued education program under the mentorship of senior scientists, ensuring consistently high standards
✨ Balanced workloads – we have a comprehensive team in place so that no embryologist is overburdened. This allows each procedure to be carried out with the care, focus and attention it deserves.

These practices go beyond industry norms, and they reflect our commitment to optimising embryo development and, ultimately, pregnancy success.

While IVF always involves joining eggs and s***m outside the body, there are a few different ways this can be done, including:

✨ Conventional IVF – eggs are placed in a dish with thousands of s***m and left to fertilise naturally
✨ ICSI (intracytoplasmic s***m injection) – a single s***m is carefully injected directly into a mature egg. This is often used when there are male fertility factors or if previous IVF attempts haven’t gone as planned
✨ IMSI (intracytoplasmic morphologically selected s***m injection) – a variation of ICSI, where a high-powered microscope helps select the healthiest-looking s***m for injection.

If fertilisation is successful, embryos are grown in a special incubator before being transferred to the uterus.

Not every egg is ready to become an embryo.

An egg must be mature for fertilisation to succeed. Here’s why:

✨ Immature eggs aren’t ready yet – eggs grow inside tiny sacs in the o***y called follicles. As they develop, they go through stages of division. Immature eggs haven’t completed this process.

✨ Mature eggs are complete – a mature egg has gone through its final stage of division (called meiosis I) and has the right number of chromosomes to pair with s***m.

✨ Fertilisation needs balance – both s***m and egg must contribute exactly half the genetic material. If an egg isn’t mature, fertilisation may not happen. And if it does, the embryo won’t develop normally.

Only mature eggs have the right chromosomal setup to successfully merge with s***m and support normal embryo development.

The tiniest lab details can make the biggest difference to embryo development.

Even seemingly small factors, such as air quality or exposure to light, can impact embryo development.

That’s why our laboratory has been purpose-built to reduce volatile compounds and harmful blue light. We also adhere to strict quality-control protocols to ensure ideal conditions for embryo growth are maintained every day.

Thinking about having a baby on your own?

You’re not alone. The latest Australia and New Zealand fertility care report shows that almost 15% of IVF cycles in 2023 were undertaken by single women – an increase from the previous year.

Thanks to donor s***m, donor eggs and advanced reproductive technology, more single women are able to fulfil their dream of starting a family.

If you’re curious to know more about your options, fertility specialist Dr Sameer Jatkar breaks it all down in his blog: https://www.newlifeivf.com.au/single-and-ready-to-have-a-baby-what-are-my-options/

At Newlife IVF, we understand that the unknown can sometimes feel daunting. Therefore, we want to ensure you are involved and informed during every step in your fertility journey – including embryo development, an area often left exclusively to a clinic’s scientific team.

In this blog, our Scientific Director, Dr Tiki Osianlis, walks you through the different stages of embryo development to help you better understand the process.

Although more technical than our other blogs, this piece is an interesting read – particularly for those who enjoy getting their head around the science of IVF.

Jet setting from Melbourne to Adelaide ✈️, the Newlife IVF team shone while attending the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) conference, showcasing our ongoing commitment to advancing reproductive care.

Among the stellar lineup of presenters were Newlife IVF’s very own Cath, who presented on ‘IVF-specific determinants to relationship breakdowns,’ and Fatima, who explored the ‘predictive value of hCG levels for live birth in IVF.’

These topics highlight the importance of addressing both the physiological and psychosocial aspects of fertility care and are a step towards translating research into meaningful reproductive care.
