With a spotlight on declining s***m counts, male infertility is finally receiving the attention it deserves.
Infertility affects one in six couples, and male factors contribute to around 50% of cases, either as the primary cause or in combination with female factors.(1)
In response, the Medical Journal of Australia has released the first evidence-based Australian guidelines to support medical practitioners involved in male infertility, such as GPs, urologists and endocrinologists.
Developed by an international panel of experts from universities and health clinics, the guidelines outline key steps in assessing male fertility.
Infertility is often viewed as a woman’s issue, and women are frequently subjected to testing to determine the cause. These new guidelines highlight the importance of assessing both partners when infertility is suspected.
By ensuring fertility concerns are identified earlier and more comprehensively, these guidelines may influence the treatment pathway for affected couples, including situations where timely referral for specialist care is needed.
