As the holiday season approaches, we’re taking a moment to honour the wonder-filled moments that shape every fertility journey. Some are quiet. Some are courageous. Some are still unfolding.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be recognising the moments of strength, care, connection and possibility – the meaningful aspects that exist at every stage of the fertility journey.

Because in this season, wonder isn’t just something we hope for. It’s something we witness every day.

The holiday season brings plenty of opportunities to celebrate 🥳🍾🥂 And for many, that means more frequent drinks. If you’re trying to conceive, being mindful of alcohol intake during this busy period can support your fertility and overall health.

This is because alcohol intake can alter hormone levels, disrupt the menstrual cycle and affect ovulation, which in turn impacts the chance of conceiving. It can also reduce s***m quality and the ability of s***m to fertilise an egg.

Even low to moderate drinking can influence the likelihood of getting pregnant and staying pregnant, so cutting back or cutting out alcohol can improve your chances of conceiving.

A little moderation during this festive stretch can go a long way toward supporting your journey into the new year with healthy momentum.

The holiday season can be a difficult time for couples and individuals undergoing fertility treatment. Although this time of year typically involves cheerful celebrations, for some, the end of the year can also symbolise another year passed without achieving their family goals.

It's common for people undergoing fertility treatment to feel overwhelmed at the thought of socialising with others. So our Counselling and Donor Services Manager, Dr Sarah Nowoweiski, shares practical tips to help you navigate the coming weeks with greater ease.

Selecting the healthiest embryo for transfer can improve the chances of a successful pregnancy, which is why we offer preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) as part of our comprehensive fertility services.

At the blastocyst stage (typically day 5–6 of embryo development), a small number of cells can be safely removed for analysis. Our scientific team then examines these cells to assess the embryo’s genetic makeup, helping to identify:

✅ The number of chromosomes (PGT-A)
✅ Structural chromosomal abnormalities (PGT-SR)
✅ Specific hereditary genetic conditions (PGT-M)

Patients undertaking PGT are supported every step of the way by our genetic counselling team. They provide guidance on testing options, help assess the likelihood of passing on a genetic condition, explain what different results may mean and offer compassionate emotional support throughout the process.

PGT isn’t required for everyone, but it can be a valuable tool for those experiencing recurrent miscarriage, repeated implantation failure or who have a known genetic risk.

PCOS research update |

New research is offering clearer insight into the genetic roots of polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) and how this knowledge may support people navigating fertility care.

🔬 The study, entitled ‘Genetics of polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS),’ looked at patterns within families and specific genetic markers found in women with PCOS. By analysing large sets of genetic and family history data, researchers explored which inherited factors may contribute to the condition.

📈 The findings suggest that PCOS has a strong genetic component. In other words, some people may be more likely to develop PCOS because of genetic variants they inherit – highlighting that the condition is complex and driven by more than lifestyle factors alone.

💡 For those on a fertility journey, greater clarity around the genetic influences behind PCOS may support more tailored assessments and individualised care. While this research doesn’t offer direct answers or guarantees, it adds valuable understanding that could help guide future management approaches and more informed decision-making around reproductive options.

In the news 🗞️

With a spotlight on declining s***m counts, male infertility is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

Infertility affects one in six couples, and male factors contribute to around 50% of cases, either as the primary cause or in combination with female factors.(1)

In response, the Medical Journal of Australia has released the first evidence-based Australian guidelines to support medical practitioners involved in male infertility, such as GPs, urologists and endocrinologists.

Developed by an international panel of experts from universities and health clinics, the guidelines outline key steps in assessing male fertility.

Infertility is often viewed as a woman’s issue, and women are frequently subjected to testing to determine the cause. These new guidelines highlight the importance of assessing both partners when infertility is suspected.

By ensuring fertility concerns are identified earlier and more comprehensively, these guidelines may influence the treatment pathway for affected couples, including situations where timely referral for specialist care is needed.

25/11/2025

Embryo genomic activation marks the stage in early development when the embryo begins using its own DNA to direct growth, rather than relying on the maternal instructions stored in the egg.

This transition – when the embryo starts producing its own genes – typically occurs around day three of development, once it has reached roughly the 6–8 cell stage.

It is a key indicator that embryologists assess to determine whether an embryo is developing as expected and has the potential to continue progressing.
