Bryce Pace - Autism Advocate, is a small autism consultancy business located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Bryce Pace - Autism Advocate was created in April 2016 when Bryce as a year 11 student wrote a facebook post discussing his disappointment in how his peers were making fun of autism, and also revealing his own diagnosis. Bryce Pace - Autism Advocate believes a world that accepts, embraces and includes autism is possible, we just need to work towards this goal. Bryce Pace - Autism Advocate works towards this goal through providing communities, schools and businesses with our innovative interactive autism workshops. In addition to our workshops we also provide environmental audits, public speaking, general consultancy work and through our inovative recharge room services and other projects that assist autistics and their families to access much needed resources and support.

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week, dedicated to challenging the stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding neurological differences.

I am proud of my neurodivergence, however I encounter many challenges living in a world that struggles to understand how to accommodate people like me.

If you would like to do something to assist in challenging the stereotypes and misconceptions of neurodiversity, please share our Visual Guide to Neurodiversity

Happy Neurodiversity Celebration Week!

Our first session for our Creating Social Stories for Inclusive Communities workshop is only 1 week away!

I developed this workshop from my lived experience accessing social stories as an autistic and dyslexic individual, and from my experience assisting organisations throughout Australia in updating theirs.

Each session includes a theory component covering the fundamentals of social stories and best practices for creating them. This will be followed by a practical activity where you will have the opportunity to draft your own social story and receive feedback and support from me.

You can learn more about these online sessions and register to attend by heading to: https://www.brycepaceautismadvocate.com/creating-social-stories-online

Seats are limited, so grab yours now before they’re all gone!

See you there!

I am excited to announce that I have been invited to speak at the upcoming Cairns Disability Support Worker Conference in June. My presentation will focus on the intersectionality of autism and LGBTQIA+ identity and how to support clients from intersectional communities.

As a proud autistic and LGBTQIA+ person, this topic is dear to me, and I look forward to having an open discussion with support workers on how clients from intersectional communities could be better supported.

If you are interested in attending the largest regional conference in Queensland, tailored for Disability Support Workers you can purchase your tickets at: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1546863?

I hope to see you there!

Over the weekend, I was pleased to discover the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower now also features on priority lift signs at Southern Cross Station in Melbourne.

I want to thank Southern Cross Station for recognising that not all disabilities are visible. It is great to see the sunflower beginning to appear on more signs next to the traditional universal access symbol, helping to raise awareness of the meaning of the Sunflower.

Please remember if you see someone wearing a sunflower lanyard, wristband or pin on public transport, please offer them your seat as they may need it.

I look forward to seeing the sunflower appear in more places in the near future.

I am excited to learn that Ability Fest is back for 2026!

Ability Fest is a fully accessible music festival where everyone is welcome, no matter their ability.

Ability Fest has been one of my favourite projects to work on alongside the team at Get Skilled Accessrecommend. In 2024 I was engaged to create a sensory map for both the Melbourne and Brisbane events and assisted the team with any neurodivergent related questions they had.

If you are looking for a great day out I would highly recommend attending Ability Fest.

I look forward to seeing you there!

I am pleased to learn that Mastercard has launched an accessibility hub for Australian businesses to assist them to become more accessible for autistic customers.

As part of this hub, Mastercard have also introduced sensory notes, a way for restaurants to highlight the sensory experience of food on their menus. If you have been to a restaurant, you may have noticed symbols on menus that let you know whether something meets your dietary requirements. Similarly, Sensory Notes indicate how something tastes, it's appearance, how it's prepared, the temperature it's served at and how it is plated.

The idea is that those of us who are autistic will be able to understand if certain dishes will meet our sensory needs. I, however, can also see how this could benefit neurotypicals, as I think we have all had an experience where a dish looked different from what we thought we ordered, as the Chef decided to prepare it or plate it differently than we are used to.

Mastercard trialled the new sensory notes on menus at some of the food vendors at the Australian Open.

I am interested to know if anyone who attended the AO this year noticed these notes and if they were helpful.

I look forward to learning more about people's experiences of this new initiative.

I am excited to announce that we have added an additional evening session for our Creating Social Stories for Inclusive Communities workshop.

Social stories, also commonly known as social scripts or social narratives, are documents that use pictures along with storytelling techniques to assist individuals in understanding a new environment, event or task.

Social Stories are a valuable resource for neurodivergent individuals of all ages as they allow us time to mentally prepare for what to expect and bring along what we may need to cope in the environment.

In this interactive workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn what makes an effective social story and walk away with your very own draft social story. You will also have the opportunity to seek feedback from someone with both lived and professional experience of neurodiversity.

You can learn more about this workshop and register to attend by heading to: https://www.brycepaceautismadvocate.com/creating-social-stories-online

I look forward to seeing you there!

Over the weekend, I was pleased to discover the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower feature on priority seat signs at some tram stops around Melbourne. I would like to thank Yarra Trams for recognising that not all disabilities are visible. I hope that this is only the beginning and that we begin to see the sunflower displayed on all pieces of public transport, helping to raise awareness of the meaning of the Sunflower. Please remember if you see someone wearing a sunflower lanyard, wristband or pin on public transport please offer them your seat as they may need it. In Australia, penalties do apply if you refuse to offer your seat to someone with a disability.

Yesterday Mattel introduced the world to Autistic Barbie. Yes, you read that correctly; this new doll was designed in consultation with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) in the US and features elbow and wrist articulation for stimming, along with flat feet, a functional fidget spinner ear defenders, and an AAC device.

Autistic Barbie also doesn't make direct eye contact and wears sensory-friendly clothing, reflecting some of the challenges that those of us on the autism spectrum face.

I would like to congratulate Mattel in asisting different communities to feel represented in the toys they play with. I also hope this is just the beginning as there is so much potential to expand to help represent the diversity of the autism spectrum.

What do you think of this new Barbie?
