March marks Melanoma Awareness Month, an important reminder of the impact of skin cancer in Australia.
Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma worldwide. Each year, around 17,000 Australians are diagnosed with melanoma, and it remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the country.
In Victoria, thousands of new melanoma cases are identified annually. Early detection is crucial in identifying skin changes that may require further medical assessment.
Regular skin checks and monitoring of new or changing moles can support early detection. If you notice a spot that looks different, changes in size or colour, or behaves differently from others, it is important to seek medical advice.
Melanoma March is an opportunity to raise awareness about skin health and the importance of protecting skin from UV exposure.
