Prof Phil Parente is the Clinical Services Director, Cancer Services at Eastern Health.

In 1995 as a resident doctor, he was rotated to Eastern Health Box Hill as his ‘country’ rotation. He has never left.

“In 2001, I had two positions at two different health care services, one of them being at Eastern Health. My heart has always been with Eastern Health so I decided to leave the other.”

Phil currently leads a range of different healthcare services including, haematology, medical oncology, palliative care, voluntary assisted dying and advance care planning.

Embodying the Eastern Health value of Learning and Improving Every Day, during COVID years, Phil undertook two masters; health and medical law, and human rights law.

“It helped me understand those big social determinants of health and what the issues were, and how we can ensure everyone gets equal treatment and positive outcomes.”

In his spare time, Phil enjoys gardening, swimming and taking his dogs out for walks.

Help protect your newborn from hepatitis B.

As part of Australia's National Immunisation Program, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) is reminding new parents about the importance and safety of the hepatitis B vaccine at birth.

Immunisation of babies at birth is a safe and effective way to prevent transmission of hepatitis B virus from mother to infant, as well as from household contacts to the infant in the first few months of life.

The hepatitis B vaccine is free for babies within 7 days of being born, and children aged 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months.

Protect your skin this summer.

2 out of 3 Australians will be diagnosed with a type of skin cancer at some point in their lives.

As we enjoy the warmer days outdoors, taking the steps to maintain your skin health is extremely important.

Wearing sunscreen is one of the many ways you can take to protect your skin.

Other steps to include in your skin protection routine are:

-Wearing sunglasses, a wide brim hat and clothes that cover your skin
-Using sunscreen, and reapplying every two hours
-Staying under the shade

“We’re always looking for better ways to do things, whether that’s improving food services, patient flow or sustainability, even small changes can make a big difference for patients.”

Starting out as a Health Information Manager, Kim Wheeler, Director Support Services at Eastern Health has built her experience through leading major hospitals and a wide range of projects.

Today, she leads large, complex support services around Eastern Health, from cleaning, food services and security to waste, recycling and patient flow. Kim and her teams play a vital role in making sure patients get where they need to be, when they need to be there.

Kim is passionate about improving patient experience, sustainability, and working closely with clinical teams, and still finds time to play netball, walk 10km every Sunday, and read her way through a book club.
